d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Speckledhen, how about an Epsom salt soak? It might help to reduce the swelling and soften things up if she's got an impacted feather.
I don't see it doing her any harm and might help. I have my fingers crossed fot her speedy recovery.
They have such sweet and varied personalities. It's been a couple of years and I still miss Cupcake and Little Miss Ickle.

Not a bad suggestion. I might try that after this cold spell has passed. We're going into the teens tonight and tomorrow night, one of winter's last hurrahs. I'd hate for her to be slightly damp and develop pneumonia on top of whatever else is wrong.

Does it look like the chick with stripes on the right? That is a buff Columbian that turned out to be a rooster.

It greatly resembles that chick yes. But the egg it hatched out of said MF. I assume that means Mille fleur?

It should be Mille Fleur then. How many chicks hatched and what colors did you get?

Here are what my MF chicks looked like from BBB. No stripes. They are gorgeous as adults!! One of my favorite colors!

D'Anver hens are usually pocket pets, completely willing to be carried everywhere and to sit with you 24/7.

This is why I will probably have nothing but d'Anvers in the future.

I don't eat many eggs or do much baking, so my chickens are basically pets that also happen to provide food. Having chickens that are willing to be held and even seem to enjoy being petted is a huge plus for me. Although it helps that I've discovered I prefer bantam eggs over LF eggs.

I hope Maura starts to feel better. When my dog developed an abscess between her toes I steeped thyme in hot water then applied the cooled tea to her foot. I figured it was worth a try for a week, then if it didn't work I would get her prescription antibiotics. She had picked up an infection like that the previous year and been put on a combo of topical and oral antibiotics for it, and the thyme actually cleared everything up faster. Maybe it would be worth trying for Maura too?

It sure couldn't hurt. I tried warm compresses at first, but it has gotten chilly again and have you ever tried to blow dry a chicken? It's not easy to get them truly dry to the skin. My German thyme has long since died, had that plant for years and years. Might just have to get a new one, but until then, guess I could buy a few sprigs if I can find any around here. I dont know if dried would have the same effect, but rather doubt it. I do have that.

My DH eats 4 eggs a day, minimum, so had to have LF. And the D'anvers are not reliable layers, generally, so that wouldn't work unless I had an army of them. Might be difficult to hold 20 hens at one time, LOL.

I use dried thyme, although that's a good point about it possibly being less potent than fresh. I haven't had to blow dry a chicken yet and I hope it's a long time before I do.

I think I'm a bit of an anomaly preferring to keep bantams for eggs over LF. When I show people my d'Anvers' eggs they always say how cute they are but ask what the heck I do with them lol.

Um, they're eggs, folks. Eat 'em! Ha, they may be small, but they'd be surprised at some of the yolk sizes in those teensy eggs!
