Hey everyone. Everytime I get back here I get busy again! I have a new smartphone for Xmas so I can acess the site more often and maybe stay in the "loop" lol. Sorry to read about all the sick chickies. :(

Maybe someday I'll get to show too. Slow and steady :p Here are some updated pics of my guys, since everyone is sharing! :)

Happy Holidays everyone! Look forward to being here more and getting to know everyone a little better. Hate being the "Popper" in a forum. XD

all of them for sure. Usually stuff like this is spread very quickly. especially MG cause it is spread by dust and what not too, so can get air born pen to pen like that. Though traffic pen to pen by us is still the number one spreader.

The tetracycline and oxytetracycline can be put in the water of all of them the easiest. That's what I'd do. Depending on what you have the dose varies. But it needs a high concentration to help after they have it anyway. think most all the "mycin" meds are for use in water or feed in powder form.

Usually they recommend 2 weeks of treatment for cases that have already broke out. and yes after about 3 days they start getting better.
Just remember if it is MG the ones that got it will always carry it, and can pass it from mother to egg, which is what stinks. Found out though as long as they arent showing signs, most of the chicks come out uninfected from carrier moms.

Also, outside of a host, MG can only live 3 days. so if you can isolate the sick from the not sick and let the pens lay out without birds in them from a week, all the MG in there will be dead and safe to return uninfected birds too. Seems it's a very frail organism outside of a host , so doesnt last long.
Hoping for the best for you
Checked with the breeder of many of my original LF and OEGB. He uses an 18% small pellet pig feed with oxytetracycline made at one of our local mills to treat birds with these symptoms. I'm picking up 100 pounds on Monday to feed the flock for the next two weeks. He has had birds with these symptoms and doesn't believe it is MG.
But, I can move the flock to two other pens for several days and use OXINE to spray down the run and coops and that will help also. I definitely will add the tetracycline to the water in the morning for the entire flock.
Thanks BBB.

Porcelain Roo, Aubrey tell me about his comb and what the standard is...Thx Melissa

looking beautiful on them all.

on the porcelains comb, well that's a perfect rose come actually. It's just a little high on the head. should be a little closer fit, but the shape and size other than hieght is what you look for. If the point followed the skull line it would be about perfect, see how it sticks out in the back. That's just due to it being a bit too high I think.

as far as the standard. Look at the birds pictured under your post. See how most of them follow the exact shape of the skull, and are tight fit to the head. If you had your comb and their fit, it'd be 100% perfect to standard. They want a nice fat comb, full of raise spikes with no dips in the middle. Close fit to the skull, broad up front tapering down in a wedge shape to a point in the back, the point also should follow the shape of the skull and not point out in the back.

great. Hope they all get better. If you catch them up to move them. If you can try to listen to their breathing. You can often hear a rattle or crack in the chest just like our version of a cold. I hope it's not MG but, honestly, I'm 99% sure based off symptoms it is. Especially seeing how he's had issues with it before...

Like I said, it's not a horrible disease, but it is something you just dont want. and can be passed mother to egg. Takes a period of stress to make it effect the bird though, so they could have had it all along, just no signs til cold weather stress hit them.

do move them and let those pens lay out a week or so, the oxine will help kill it off quicker too, no matter what it is. It's good from all sorts of respritory stuff. If the pens are dust and dry like mine being fully roofed, it may just be the dust doing it. Hopefully it's something simple like that for you.

The birds are looking good, congrats on all the sucess this year.

I've been out building some new 10 x 20 ground brooders to help out here. Making 3 of them for now.
I just cant keep them all in the normal brooders I have, I over load them too quick.
Plan to keep them in the old brooders for about 4-5 weeks til they are feathering up nice, then put thme out in these new big pens. That will help free up the rotation of the 3x 8 off ground brooders, and cut back on the over crowding. Hope it all works out.
will post some pics of them once I get done. making 1 for d'anver, phoenix, and ohiki so I can keep a ground brooder per breed. Hoping this will at a glance let me see what I have good numbers of and what I need to work on more. cant hurt!

Aubrey, I have been building pens too, colors sure take a lot of space. Glad I only have one breed, well till I start with the watermaals. Oh, it just hit me yesterday, with all the lavender birds I am getting out of the decendants of my first silver quail rooster, I should have a bunch of silver quail hens split to lavendar. So if I pair some of them with a lavendar cockerel that came from a self blue hen and the original silver quail rooster I should have instant lavender silver quails. I will be rotating hens every three weeks until I see lavander. Gotta go build pens!!!

yep, that should make it pretty easy on them for you. They are on my wish list too. Having a hard time on getting my numbers to come out right. I aint good at the lottery!.

Just got back in from pen building #1 Had a 2x4x10 crack me in the head. Thrying to do it all by myself. Hard to hold a 10 board up in the air and be able to nail in both ends. It fell about 4 feet before it got me so it had some speed up. Though I was going into a coma there for a minute!! LOL

Dang that hurt!

but yep, when you start doing color work, pen space is a must. Takes a bunch of them. I'm at about 70 and still need another 40 or so. But will have to wait til chicken money starts flowing again before I jump on them. These 3 chick pens are gonna cost me about $1,000 as is.

I had a lot more breeds and species at one time, but that's whay I cut it all back this year. Now 3 main breeds and 4th that I'm just starting good with, and the call ducks. That's plenty to keep me busy.

watch them 2x4's!!!

C-clamp and a nail gun is the way I roll. Been hit in the head alot, Most of the time it is from something I left on top the step ladder when I move it.
