Oh my Aubrey, tough weather there in GA. I'm glad that you are doing okay despite it. They say we were suppose to get storms today here in NH but nothing but drizze and fog all day. I just love seeing Speckled Hens pics and hope to hear that I will be seeing my new chicks soon. I finally gave in with my broody Silklie mix and put six fertile eggs under her. She is crazy determined and they should hatch on Easter if all goes well. I am hoping that I will have my new babies then so they can all grow up together.

Aubrey, ended up with the 2 porcelains and 5 mille fleurs. The last two were DIS, no idea why, they just didn't pip though they were in position. Anyway, I'm starting my little flock with 7 babies. Hopefully, there are a few pullets in there!

no problem Julie, glad to help, yep they all should be ready at the same time looks like

Thanks, Aubrey. They weren't the only ones. A Buff Orp, the last one in the bator, pipped, then zipped all the way around and quit breathing. That makes me crazy-no idea why. It was a huge baby, though. Their coop is painted inside and when the weather is dry for a few days, will paint the exterior and start the pen. It's quite cheerful in there--I chuckled the whole time I was painting those violet walls, LOL.

I have just ordered 4 D'anvers from MPC and am wondering if any of you find the males to be very aggresive? (it may say so somewhere in the 75 pages here....?)

I don't breed them, I just have a pair of quail ones I got years ago. I don't even know how old they are, but I've had them for at least 5 years.

One thing I've noticed is that the hen doesn't cluck or make the usual "hen chicken" noises. She chirps and makes all sorts of little high pitched sounds, that sound nothing like a chicken. As she gets older I also notice she doesn't try to fly up to the rafter roost anymore in the barn. Instead, when I come in and she wants to go "upstairs," she comes running over to me across the stall railing and waits for me to get the barn broom. She hops on it and gets a ride up to the rafters.

It's amazing that she makes that connection (me + broom = easy way up to the roost) in her little chicken brain.

The male was more aggressive when younger, but he is a lot mellower now. Still cocky, but not aggressive and doesn't pick fights.
