d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Oh, it's too early for a battle, you guys. Love the videos, especially of Zena checking out the new alien kids.

We had a major storm last night and in fear of the power going out, started a fire in the wood stove and turned on the little oil fired heater so I'd have a warm place to sit the bator for awhile. And I found my insta-heat packs to put under any babies in the brooder if we had no electricity. Thank goodness we didn't lose power, at least not yet. More rain coming.

Here are the two mini-Divas, the only two of these in this batch. There are more under my broodies and I'll start a new batch as soon as this hatch is over that will have some of Shadow's chicklets in it, too. I think black would have been cute, too, but I'm thrilled that one of the porcelains sired her chicks this time. One of Aimee's is pipped and one of the BR x EE. Today is Day 20.

Two D'Anvers are pipped now, one of Aimee's and one of Penny's. At least, that's all I can see. These Diva Ninjas are beating everyone, aren't they? The power has been flickering, so I'm nervous. Babies in a brooder are easier to keep warm than eggs in a bator.

ETA: The first D'Anver egg hatched, Aimee's, which was in the collection for 13 days before setting. And, of course, we are under a tornado watch, as we always are when I incubate.

I have to get off. The scrolling is choppy again and giving me a headache. My phone just got zapped and killed by a brown out. I hated that phone anyway.

We got my son into 4H with poultry. Got him and my nephew each a Dutch d'Anver rooster - blue quaill. My son named his Foghorn and lives in his own little coop next to the big coop where my laying hens and Aracauna rooster live. My brother-in-law built a coop at his place for his son's bird only his bird was too lonely. Had to get him a hen to keep him company. We love them! Next to the regular chickens they are histerical!

Just finished helping 2 Quail D'Anver babies hatch. I have 66 eggs in 2 incubators. A friend gave me 3 dozen, I threw in some of my own and the first 2 to pip and zip were the 2 Quail D'Anvers. To be honest, I never expected them to hatch because they were either frozen in the nest in the coop or put in the refrigerator to eat later. I threw them in to fill the incubator. They both looked like they were having trouble, and the membrane was drying and not broken well enough. Since the other eggs hadn't pipped yet, I opened the bator and carefully peeled the shell and membrane away from the chick, watching for un-absorbed yolk or blood - none. Both chicks were freed and are wiggling and cheeping and looking tired waiting to dry off.

Before anyone jumps on my case about intervening... this is a personal call and every case is unique. On my first hatch, I had a chick zip and it was peeping away, but the membrane was not broken all the way around. I didn't intervene and the chick died in the shell. I don't know whether it would have made it if I helped, but now I am more aware of what to watch out for.

These 2 Quail D'Anvers belong to Gazpacho and Amelia Egghart, my first EVER chickens that hatched while I was farm-sitting for a friend. They are also the first eggs of my own that I've hatched. I feel like I've come full circle. I guess that makes me a Grandma. Blessings!!!

These are maddeningly slow to hatch! I just had one D'Anver baby hatch that I didn't even realize was pipped. I see two others pipped and two are in the brooder. There are 15 total pure D'Anvers. Only one of the LF birds is in the brooder and I see no pips on any others and today is Day 21. An F3 tornado ripped through just north of us, in Murphy, NC, destroying the feed store and lots of other stuff. Walmart is without power, but ours kept going, which is unusual for anytime we incubate, no matter the time of year. Still, drama!
