d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Oh Lordy Cyn...why did you put that video up? You know what a sucker I am...is it eating and such on its own? Don't you dare put it down unless you have to...if it can get around on its own, I will give it a chance.

Aubrey...where you be? You and Aimee okay?

Yes, Aubrey, please check in! This was a nasty round of storms, for sure.

LH, the baby is eating on its own just fine and speeding across the brooder on one leg, using the bent one and its wings for balance. I'm not sure it's drinking from the waterer, but I have that up on a fire brick and it may not be raising itself up to do so. It's great at drinking water from an eyedropper for sure. I'm going to encourage it to raise itself up and drink from the waterer on its own and I'm confident that it can from what I've seen it do today.

ETA: the only reason we had not put down that chick yet was that she has been getting around so much better and we were hoping she might be able to use the leg more, so we were observing her all day. She gets run over, but is very resilient.

yep, was my birthday Saturday, between that and the storm I was pretty tied up. Got about 8 inches and 2 confirmed tornados Saturday. All the tornados that were here started right by me, one under a mile, Thankfully they were all headed away from here, but really tore up some of my friends places just to the east of us. One town over is a mess, mobile homes in tree tops and tree tops in homes. The big one was a F3 So we got lucky. Just a few feet earlier and we'd be in bad shape. Lost a few chicks in the brooders due to a long power outage and all the damp air blowing around, that sucked but that was the worst that happened here

Chicken poops gone from the yard now though.

Happy birthday. Too bad about the chicks, but I guess it could have been worse. Been watching the crazy weather on TV all weekend. It was just cold here and snowed today. My new out side brooder is good to at least 28 degrees.

Very glad you're ok. Happy belate birthday....better late than never. Also glad to hear only a few chicks were lost.

Happy belated Birthday Aubrey, I am glad that you and yours are safe. Sorry to hear about the lil ones. We were dodging the tornadoes here to. F3s South and North of us and an F4 that got too close for comfort But thank heavens missed us and dissipated before it got her but it took out a good 60+ miles path before then. :(

Cyn, watch lil one...you know me and my soft heart. If it can fight its way into functioning, I will give it a chance you know that. JJ close your eyes but you cannot know I am a softee...you must believe I am a mean ole killer type woman who will stop at nothing to infilitrate your place with my Hairy Legged Horde!

Happy belated Birthday, Aubrey!

That little one, I'm not sure of, LH. It still is not going to the waterer on its own and the others are running over its leg, pulling on its toes, etc. If its a pullet, being mated may injure the joint further; it a male, it probably wouldn't be able to mate, certainly not to spar with the others. I have my doubts that we should keep it going, I hate to say. It is sure trying, which is the reason it hasn't been put down yet, but the leg is definitely a permanent thing.

Cyn, as always I have the utmost faith and trust in you. Whatever you and Tom decide about lil one I know will be the right thing. My sort of unwritten rule is that it must be able to eat and drink on its own...if it cannot I do not want it suffering. Keep me posted and handle it the way you would handle it...that is always fair and in the best interest of the baby. I am good with it.

I knew you would be. Will decide sometime today about it.

JJ, this picture is for you. Eyestripe Kid definitely has a different look, especially on top of its head, which is marked like a bb red, I believe. Interesting. Sorry about my destroyed hands--I'm heavy into quilting right now and they are in bad shape.

Cynthia, That is an interesting looking chick, a bb red head on a millie body. None of mine have hatched like that. Decisions about handicapped chicks are always hard. I had a pullet once that hatched with a leg just like that. I put one of those band aid hobbles on it and after about three weeks she straghtened up pretty good, just had a little limp. I decided as long as she could act like a chicken she would be ok. After six months she was still Ok and laying then one day I came home and her leg was turned out to the side slipped tendon but she could still get around and still acted like a chicken. A few weeks later she was no longer able to get around so I had to put her down. It seems like you always get a little more attached to those chickens. I learned it is a lot better to do the deed early, before there is any history. It still ain't no fun, but I believe better in the long run. I guess I might have something in common with Cetawin. Whom I knew from the get go was a softee, why else would she let her horde run around with all that unsightly leg foliage (not your proper military bearing).
