Well I havent posted over here much, since I am still waiting to get my D'anvers, but seeing all the pictures makes it hard to wait. Those chicks are all so adorable.

JJ sounds like you are making good crosses. to bring in the color you want. I hope to be there next year being able to make crosses to help in the colors of this breed. I am so looking forward to having the breed and doing interesting crosses.

So since you all have been talking about crossing colors and what you are trying to get, is there a book on color genetics, I know about the calculator, but I have failed to get it to work.

In the meantime, keep the pictures coming of all your chicks as they grow up.

 

[Boggy Bottom Bantams]

Aubrey this week I hatched 5 quail chicks, one is out of my silver quail and a regular quail hen. I can't tell which one, does that make it a male?

Yes should be a male if you know they were together long enough for the silver to be the father for sure. Male silver to gold hen should give you silver in the pullets only, so this one should be male if the silver is infact the daddy.

Curious to see what the stripped ones end up being. Know what they came from by chance?

I'll get with you on the eggs when I get a little closer. Looking at 1st of April to ship I think, got to double check my book, but think I'm free to collect end of next week for you

Krish- the best book I have found is an Introduction to Color Forms of the Domestic Fowl by Brian Reeder. It is pretty easy to understand. Some things that he says are not always agreed on by everybody. But it does a good job of explaining genes and E alleles.

The striped one is out of my non split millies. My second pen of blue quail started laying today, shouldn't be too long till I have a bunch of them. Of course , like all my birds they to are projects. Well I have some good quail but so does everybody.

The first of April is good. Kinda of excited by the crele, haven't given much thought to barred birds, but those would be my choice. I am sure I will be seeking lots of advice on them in the future.

If it helps, in all my pics a few pages back, the green boards at ground level are 2 x 4's they stand about 3.5 inches high also the wire mesh is 2 inch, so you can kinda scale off that a little.

Hens should never be bigger than roos though, that's for sure. If you are familiar with old english bantams, or sebrights, they are real close in size to them.
If I think about it, next pics I'll try to get a size reference for you.

Maybe Cynthia can too if she thinks about it. She takes them way more often than I do. But I still need to get JJ a red pyle pic, and I want to add the dun mottled too, so I have a few more to go.

My roo is slightly smaller than my Sebright hen and is smaller than an OEG bantam hen I had here briefly on loan. The blue quail hen was very slightly bigger than those breeds.

You need to keep a few ugly ones around, makes the rest look better.

Were you looking for a comparison pic for male and female sizes? Or did I misunderstand?

I tried to find some, but didn't have many recent with males and females side by side. The first one is my smallest hen, so she's really tiny next to the males. Two of my three hens are raising chicks at the moment so they won't be getting near the roosters for awhile or I'd take new pics for you.

Lovely birds! No I wanted pics of d'anvers next to something of a recogniseable size like a brick or a cola can, just so I can see the general size that is the norm for these guys. As originally I thought my roo was the right size, but then I bought a hen who was much bigger than him. I was wondering if he is right size and she was big, or if she was normal and he is small. ....if that makes sense.
