My 6 week Roo started crowing at 5 weeks to the day. He sure is a sweet little fella and is fantastic at keeping watch on his girls

Well, I wasn't imagining it. Angus is having some sort of circulatory issue. I guess that pneumonia he had as a small chick when we had that wild weather thing (90 one day, then 50 the next as highs with rainy period) has compromised his lung capacity, or he has some heart issue. I just took them yogurt and as he was eating, he turned almost blackish, he was so dark, worse than a couple of days ago. Scared me to death-I thought he'd keel over right there. It's such a contrast to Aubrey's bright healthy red, or some folks might not notice it right away, but my Delaware has issues in heat after his severe fungal lung infection of last summer, so I am sensitive to that stuff.

It's hot, but not nearly as hot as it will get, only in the low 80's with some humidity today, since last night, we had heavy rains. Of course, Angus is my sweet D'Anver rooster, the one who never bites or flogs and he is the alpha in there now. Gosh, I hate to lose my best one! He's my little buddy.

Thanks, Aubrey. There's really not a thing I can do for him. Their pen is covered so very shady. There are two fans in the coop itself as well. They have water in the coop as well as outside in the pen and sometimes, I put a chunk of ice in it when the afternoon is particularly toasty. If he has compromised lungs or some heart thing going on, then I just have to hope it doesn't do him in this summer. His breathing is fine, no odd sounds or anything like that.

He's so gorgeous, both of those roosters are, but Angus is just the best tempered boy for a D'Anver I could have hoped for.

I loved my quial bearded d'anvers and went to state fair with them last year!!! Great birds!

Cynthia....dang I am really sorry to hear this Angus is such a little doll. I hope he is alright. Have you considered doing the oxine treatment on him...maybe it would help? I am grasping for straws here...I do not want you to lose the little buddy. Maybe hang on to Molly's boy just in case...he might be a sweetie, well sweeter than Aubrey (no offense Aubrey)...just in case anything happens to Angus.

I did think of that, keeping the mille cockerel, that is, Ladyhawk. No one has claimed him yet. He's doing fine in there. Angus tapped him on his little noggin today and Molly went after Angus, can you believe it? She's still guarding that little 8 1/2 week old cockerel. He may be a porcelain split, too, though I can tell his comb isn't going to be that nice. It's more like Rusty's was, smoother and flatter than is preferred.

Cynthia, good luck with Angus. It seem like it has always got to be the favorite.

I just put the last of my eggs (15 silver/blue silver quail and 6 mille/porc) in the incubator. I have got to stop hatching. At least untill Aubrey has some eggs for me. The rest of the summer will be devoted to growing and building chicken coops.

Aimee useto name a lot of ours that she liked. Seemed like none made it a full year after that, so we decided naming them was out for us.
We just call them all That Chicken now...

Cynthia, that Oxine is some good stuff. Toni-Marie Astin gave me a jug on one of my visits and told me to try it. It seems to help with all sorts of stuff. Couldnt hurt if you have some around.

I know about Oxine all too well! It cured the fungal infections in my Dellie rooster and the few older hens last summer beautifully, using it in my vaporizer. The protracted unusually humid and extra hot period we had for our location last year, plus all the wetting down of pens we were doing to try and keep them cool led to that, I believe. Won't be wetting pens again this year!

I do have some still. Maybe I'll mist them when they all go to roost and add some to the waterer today so he can dip his beak in there. I'm not sure it's technically respiratory in nature, since there are no breathing symptoms right now, only the dark color in Angus's face, but it sure can't hurt!
