I keep it on hand and put 1/4 tsp to a gallon in every waterer....it helps keep down the algae and slime.
I ended up putting a swamp cooler in the new side of the hen house and it circulates thru the layer side. Brings the temperature down 20 degrees in that tin roofed area without the extra water from spraying down like last year.
I'll have o spray down the outside pens when the temps get really high. We have enough wind to dry out the area pretty quickly. Planted Sunflowers for shade on the west this year and they have to be watered.

Angus has an impacted crop. Noticed his chest seemed more "bullish" than normal and pulled him out to check.

Several days ago, I let him and his group into part of a pen that had grass growing. He must have eaten lots of long strands, not being accustomed to eating grass at all. I've never had a rooster with a crop issue-they don't usually eat enough for that.

He's lost a huge amount of weight and I'm not sure I can save him, but he's in the house in a rabbit cage with water with copper sulfate to offset any fermentation and some plain yogurt mixed with olive oil. We'll massage him many times daily and see if we can get it to move. If not, we really hate to think of doing surgery since that rarely ends well.

man I hate that Cynthia, so far I've never had one with it either, so I cant really tell you much to do to help with it other than what you are already trying. Hope it passes

It's so unexpected. Roosters just don't seem to get this, as they rarely eat half as much as the hens do. The bantams have been in this pen before when I let them out to free range a bit-it's an extension of the grow out pen near their own and I had it closed off from the youngsters in there for awhile that day. Since Sunny and Shadow were used to free ranging, I opened it up as a treat for them. Living in the woods on a mountain, there aren't many grassy areas here, but no one else had their crop bog down this way, only Angus. Of course, it's my Angus, darn it.

Sour crop is easier to fix than impacted crop, so I'm really scared for him.

We had a lady on the OKIE thread have a hen that ate too much straw and got an impacted crop. The vet purged/flushed the crop and was able to remove enough to relieve the pressure. Then started the hen on antibiotics. They massaged with yogurt and olive oil too. She has made a full recovery.

I had Oxine in their waterer so he was drinking water with anti-bacterial/anti-fungal in it already. Will keep trying with him. He's crowing in the house, answering Aubrey, much to the displeasure of my dog, who is scared of roosters crowing, LOL. When I had Zane, my crippled BR, in the house in a playpen on occasion, she'd go hide in the bathroom when he'd let loose.

I was growing out the extra four pullets, Lucy and Mina plus the two Coch'Anvers because I needed more females in that coop, but if I lose Angus, I don't need them. I just feel discouraged right now, almost ready to keep the ones I'm already attached to like Penny, Aimee and Carly, plus maybe the two lavender Coch'Anvers and sell off Aubrey, the little mille male plus Lucy and Mina. I think I'm just tired. Lots going on in other flocks with injuries and broodies and in the family right now, too, so could be I'm a bit overwhelmed.

My D'Anver hen is laying again so we separated her from babies today. If anyone is in the San Diego area and interested in Quail and Blue Quail (poss keeping the Blue Splash) please let me know. They will be cheep, er, cheap, since parents are siblings.

Would like to add new blood to our stock so if anyone has hatching eggs willing to ship to San Diego area that are other than Quail and Blue Quail please let me know. Would love to add more color as well as fresh blood to our growing flock. My little hen is a wonderful mama so will have her hatch them out for me.

Cynthia-- Wish you the best of luck with Angus, hope he pulls through.

It won't be long now. One more door to build and hang. Then just add sand and chickens. I think I was faster building 20 or 30 years ago.

Spectacular!! I love that, JJ. I want something like that for my main flock, just on a larger scale since the birds are bigger. Looks awesome, buddy. Will you leave the pop doors open 24/7 or have a small door for them? It looks really tight against predators.


Angus is settled down for the night in the cage by the window. He's had plenty of massages and his poop shows something is being pushed through since it's not completely watery or green. He's had only plain yogurt mixed with olive oil for food all day long. If his crop is down in the morning, he may get some cooked egg yolk mashed up in there, too, but we'll see. He's been pretty good. He obviously likes me better than Tom because during the massages, he calms down when I talk to him and closes his eyes.
