d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

So glad to hear Angus is doing better.

I had the most upsetting morning. I when out to find my (SL Polish) oldest roo, Rock Star killed. Then my black d'Anver and 2 porcelain babies too. It looks like Coons pulled the d'anver's through the wire and I'm sure Rock Star was trying protect his girls while they were trying to get thru the door and he got close enough for them to grab him. I haven't had a coon attack like this before, seeing him was an awful sight. My husband has been working all night to try and make all kinds of reinforcements and have set several traps. Just so frustrating and sad.

Oh, no, that's awful! I see you have chicken wire and other wide opening wire- cover that with hardware cloth-coons definitely make a mockery of chicken wire.

Angus's crop seems back to normal size this morning. He wants to drink and drink and drink so I can't leave his water in the cage. He won't eat the yogurt stuff anymore. I got some chick starter and crushed some oatmeal up and made it really soupy and he's slurping that up now. We still don't know what his bad color was about before this all happened so we don't want to get lulled into a false sense of security about his health.

Mccaff - Oh no :( Thats really sad. I'm sorry that happend to you and your chickens.

SpeckledHen - Thats really great, I am happy to hear he is getting better. Hoping for the best!

My 2 week old Blue quail has cream coloring showing up on its breast and shoulders/back area. Its really light but its there. It also doesnt have red coming into its comb like the other two for sure boys. Does this coloring mean pullet? Or roo?

Also wanted to share a picture of how tiny this new chick is.

I don't get to check the site often. Glad to see it has been busy though.

Sorry to hear of the problems some folks are having.

Glad to hear that Angus is doing better.

I would like to ask for a little assistance, though. My son and I managed to hatch some chicks in an incubator we made. A few weeks ago I posted picks of one that had chipmunk markings. Below are some current pics. Anybody have a guess of what it might be? Again, this was out of Quail parents. The other 3 d'Anvers all appear to be Quail, 2 pullets and 1 cockerel.

It was looking alot like the Quail pullets, but the hackle on the neck is almost solid red/orange.

(the white & black one in the first pick is a Silver Duckwing OEGB...98% sure it is a cockerel.)

Angus is still with us, but I'm not sure things are being processed well through his crop. I don't see enough poop, nothing actually solid yet, after 3 days.

Aubrey, you didn't say these D'Anvers could be serial broodies! Aimee appears to be trying to go broody again! Just hope if she does, Penny doesn't follow suit like last time. Aimee was pushing her chicks away at 3 weeks of age last time and Penny took over, so maybe it would be a good thing for Penny to be a co-mama like she did at the beginning of the year. Their first chicks are 11 1/2 weeks old now. Don't tell me they'll go broody quarterly!

I've already had 6 broodies this year and have one sitting right now.

yep Cyn, some are like that, every mille I have right now is in one big pile sitting on a bunch of nothing. This time of year is when they get bad about it, back and forth back and forth, they dont know what they want to do.

Bantam babes,
Those marking dont mean anything other that it's a blue quail, they should all have a cream tint to those areas due to the blue dilution of reds and golds.

4HDad,
cant really make out the color in those pics, need a good lighting picture to tell the little details, but it's a quail base looks like, might have a little touch of bb red in it though, cant really tell, would explain the chick color at least. Does the breats have any salmon tinting to it, or is it just a solid buff color?

Sorry about the poor pics. I tried taking them with the cell phone real quick this morning. Below are some I took this evening with a real camera and outside for better lighting.
