d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Hello d'anver lovers. A few questions I'm hoping you can help me with:

#1- I'm going to look at some d'anver chicks next weekend. She has everything from day olds to 12 week olds. Is there a good age to determine gender? Any hints or clues? I'm not needing it to be 100% accurate, but I'd like to not end up with a bunch of roos if I can help it. Any help would be appreciated. Any suggestions for picking out a good quality chick?

#2- Pronunciation. I've heard your breed name pronounced at least 3 different ways...all by people who *should* know what they are talking about with the breed. Can some of you weigh in? What do you believe to be the correct pronunciation.

Hi...

I am new to the breed myself but I can tell you this...the males declare themselves pretty early...2 - 3 weeks old they usually have a pink prominent comb....

This is Bert at 18 days old....comb is apparent and pink. :)

pronounce "dee anver" is what I have been told. As far as qualityI am not sure what to tell you to look for but with any chicks I always look for a few things...bright clear eyes, active, good feet (straight toes, good balance and so forth) and overall healthy looking.

I have noticed that d'Anvers can be skittish at a few weeks old if they are not accustomed to constant handling so don't let that throw you off. They are a high energy breed...the pullets are sweet and the boys can be a rowdy lot as they age. Overall they are beautiful great little bird. Hopefully one of the more experienced d'Anver folks will jump in here for you. Enjoy your new babies.

I couldn't tell my girls or boys apart for about 2 months, then he started getting his "purdy feathers" (as I like to call them

). But when he was little, as soon as we unpacked them he started attacking my finger. He's acted like a little turd his whole life, and is still my favorite. I don't know if that is a common thing, for the roosters to start acting aggressive very early, since that was my first "batch".

Thanks guys. I've always said "Danver" but then I heard someone say it more like "Dawnvey" and then I heard a "duh-anver." lol...I didn't want to sound like a fool if I've been pronouncing it wrong all this time. I think we are going to grab a few and then maybe get some hatching eggs for the girls to try out....thats the plan anyway. Lets hope I walk away with only a few. What about leg color? I know in some breeds like silkies, pink toes will fade (usually) as they age. Is this the same in d'Anvers?

My daughter calls them "Chipmunk chickens" lol. She likes their fluffy faces.

I thought my precious li'l d'Anver cockerel was a pullet for several weeks. He always allowed the tiny little Japanese bantam chick to crawl underneath his wing. After about four weeks, the comb began showing up fairly prominent and red. -and at 9/10 weeks, the crow! We love him. He has the greatest personality/temperament.

I had a petting zoo owner and fair judge that couldn't say d'Uccle. I told her that, according to Wikipedia it is dew-clay. One said duh-ewwwwwwcle, and the other said dee-cle.

Lol..I probably say that one wrong as well...I've always said "duck-uhl." But I have heard it said "dew-clay."
