Barnies versus Welumers compared to Marans:

I know what Marans' eggs are like, but I was wondering about Barnies and Wellies if they are both equally dark and if the egg shape was similar to that of the Marans'. I think I remember reading that one of them (Barnevelders or Welsumers) were known for being spotted heavily.

I have never seen any Barnevelder eggs but all of the Welsummer eggs I have seen have been speckled. Hope that helps.

if you go to the Buy-Sell-Trade hatching eggs and search Welsummer then you should see some pics of what people have.

I should do that when I get access to a computer away from work. At work, most photos are blocked, and at home my wireless link isn't that strong a signal... I guess I could pack up the laptop and go sit at McDonalds or Starbucks one day.

If you just want a nice, reasonably priced bird that lays pretty eggs, go with Welsummers:

Here's a comparison of Wellie eggs with good Marans eggs (Wellies on the left):

edited to add: Barnevelders in this country do NOT lay dark eggs. They are attractive, nice birds, but don't count on them for a lot of color.
