I have one dark cornish hen who has just gone "unbroody" (Is that a word?). She gave up her babies last week...I think she has laid an egg or two over the last month but am wondering, is this breed good for laying? The only reason I think she has laid is that we have gotten a few random eggs that don't look like the rest. They are almost white eggs...kind of a cream color. I got another one, a big one today and think it might be from her. Anyone know this breed's reputation for laying?

I generally get 6 eggs a week out of mine. I think she's moulting now, and isn't laying. Her eggs are medium-sized. I think mine just tends to lay more than other people's.

6 is pretty good, I would say. Ours is laying maybe one a week right now...not so good, but she just came out of being broody. Her chicks are about 9-10 weeks old. Could it take a while for her to get going again?

i have 3 of them, they lay very well for me, i get an egg from each one almost every day, my 3yr old just went broody for the first time, im wondering why it took her so long

I have often ordered my Dark Cornish hens from MMH and loved them for egg laying. They laid a med. brown, very large egg. I had one who always laid a double yoker, at least 5 or 6 a week and they would not fit in an egg carton. They are great foragers and are very hardy. They are not so pretty though, they don't "age" well. I never had the heart to eat them, but they were very dense/solid. I still prefer them to many other layers. Calm and quiet. Henz

I only have cornish bantams so my eggs are not so large, it takes two to equal a large std egg. I think as a general rule bantams lay less then std size. But I do get a egg from mine almost every day except when it is very hot, they do well in the heat I don't see them panting and they are active they just don't like to lay eggs in the heat. My OEGB also lower production in hotter days, even though both breeds are shaded. The heat does not seem to effect my ducks though, maybe because they lay before day break.
