Dark Egg Breeds Thread

Hi Randy!!!

I've spent the last 3 days reading every single post-- I don't claim to remember every post, but there were plenty of goodies to put in my marans file! SO much to learn!

I only recently learned there were wheaten marans-- how to there eggs compare to cuckoos and BC?

i think wheaten are gwneraly darker than chuckoo and not as dark as bc..

I have a few cuckoo chicks than came from eggs that reminded me of the old silly putty; fairly pale on the marans spectrum. I have a non-marans layer that lays are darker reddish color. Maybe a RIR is laying that--haven't caught her in the act yet.

My marans are only about 13 -14 months old. I noticed after their last break, the egg size increased. Finally.

I have a golden cuckoo marans that lays what you might consider a bloom egg. At her peak, they are a lovely dark plum. Now they are more of a rose color. She's one of those rebellious hens that lays wherever she feels like, but I like the eggs and her type.
The only problem- all of her chicks have been blue golden cuckoo BOYS.

Nice to see this thread up again!

Nice to see this thread up and running, now I will have to take some pics of my eggs my girls are finally laying.

Sorry you only go boys--gives you more to select from for breeding, right? I've only seen a few pics of the plum colored eggs, and they really look like rosa plums with the bloom. Very pretty!

If you have a good pic of your girl, I'd love to see her type. That is my focus right now, trying to understand good type.
