Dark Egg Breeds Thread

The only dark egg layers I have are Marans.

Recently I hatched these eggs ....

Here are some of the chicks today, at 8 weeks old (not the Lavender one) ....

Same bird as the one just above ...

Feel free to comment HONESTLY. It won't hurt my feelings! Really, it won't!

My experience may be different from other ppls but here it is...I had some.. Very flighty... good layers. The rooster I had was very aggressive... They were a lot of work to keep in for me as they are really good foragers and prefer to be solitary. The eggs I got were matte in color, much smaller and were not as spectacular to me personally against other birds I had. It was a hazard to house both where I am as the Pene Roo was crafty and very fertile.. I opted not to have crosses so he was rehomed where he can run wild and free.... I rehomed him with his only girl pene.

Kathinmo Wow... the one with a red bib looks like a cochin there sooooo much leg feathering... Nice pullets!!!

There they are! Those eggs are beautiful Kathy. How many of those hatched out?

They are 8 weeks old, so it will be awhile yet.

BTW: I am hatching right now, too. They aren't Marans, BUT they are shipped eggs (and in this hot weather), and so far I have 7 out, 5 pips, and one egg not doing anything. Pretty good, huh.....
