Dark Egg Breeds Thread

Hey All, Many year ago they used to say to dip your eggs in Tek Trol in water. Dr Swartz who was retired from MSU before Dr. Fulton always said to Dip in Tylan water to help keep Resperitory diseases like CRD and MG out of your flock. Now people are using Oxine and Denagard as a dip. Don

Just to ad a little here, in the old days some of the large show chicken farms I knew would keep all young fowl seperate from the adult fowl and on different areas of the farm all together. A few I knew that had more than one farm would keep young on one farm and adult on another.. Don

neat!

The whole dipping thing is something I need to learn more about, I guess.

It's a shame we have to worry about folks selling eggs from diseased flocks, though. Just makes me....

DON yep I do that... that is a good preventative measure...I have a pen just for juvenile... virgin ground if you will.... I NEVER house my juveniles and adults together as adults can be carriers and the juveniles could get ill... and then reinfect the adult... that much I have got in my brain Don... thanks though...It is a great thing to bring up as lots of ppl don't realize it...

What is the dipping solution of choice??? I want to do some research.. thanks.

This is all stuff I have in my records from over the years. I keep a record of everything I do according to medication and disease. This all goes back to the old theory of find the oldest poultry breeder you can find and try and have the person mentor you on poultry. Some only keep the info in their head and not in a book. With my Brahma Bantams I had two of the best breeders as mentors and they lived several hundred miles away. Don

Did you say Brahma bantams.... I would love to see a picture...or better yet..some eggs in the spring... I know I couldn't get them from a better source... Do you ever part with eggs from these??

I have had these Brahma for over 30 years and have not sold any yet, when I was showing a lot didn't want to show against my own birds. I plan on showing some at the crossroads show at the National show next year. Don

I see.... that does make sense... No biggy....Not like I would show there anyway but I get your drift.... Besides I am your worst nightmare...I just think they are cute!! LOL!!

Hi,
How do you handle chicks hatched by a broody hen?
Also, not sure which thread but there was a discussion about washing eggs and removing a protective coating on the eggs which had a negative impact on hatch rates. Does anyone her have experience with that?
Joe

Joe, in my operation no eggs are hatched by hen as I vaccinate for Mareks disease and set eggs once a week so I do not waste too much vaccine as it goes up in price every year it seems. Also I never wash eggs before incubation. With the dipping you only submerge the egg in the solution and lay on a towel to dry. Don

eh sorry to overpost but there's three threads for this, I didn't take three photos by egg color.

1.jpg

top row is mossy and partridgesque BCMarans. The other ones, I would like to figure out the roosters' and the hens' egg traits and maintain separate lines for each type of eggs. Someday.

there's no bloodline they were just everybody's eggs put together, bred three years by somebody and this is my first generation. I don't plan to mess up egg color for the looks of the girls.
