Dark Egg Breeds Thread

Ok so I had cukoo marans and their eggs were anything but dark. Is there special food you should or need to feed them.??

No, the darkness is determined by something like 9 genes. It is genetic. They will lay darker eggs at the beginning of the egg laying cycle.

French Black Copper Marans lay the darkest of the Marans.

Many Penedesencas lay eggs that are just as dark.

I have a suspicion that the two are related. Penes have a carnation comb that is a DQ for Marans. Penes are supposed to have a comb like that.

Some Welsummers lay exceedingly dark eggs too. Which I find very interesting......like maybe their entire "putting dark pigment on the egg" is totally different from Marans. Mostly since to get very dark Marans eggs, they have to lay less frequently, and I don't think that that is the case with the Welsummers, who usually have better lay rates than the Marans.

I don't have enough experience to know for sure though.

I have seen that on a few partridges looking Marans in photos
