Which breeds of the dark egg layers are more or less efficient in regards to feed to eggs ratio? I would like to have some dark egg layers but at the same time have hens that are not too inefficient in this regard. Just wondering if I can have my cake and eat it to.

I may be prejudice to a point but IMHO Penedesencas lay at the best rate. Marans, Welsummers and Barnevelders aren't that far behind though.
I haven't raised Marans but I've found Welsummers and Barnevelders to be more consistent layers through the year. Penedesencas tend to take a fair autumn winter break but lay almost daily the rest of the year so on an annual basis, I'd pick Penes.

Marans have a POOR lay rate, and POOR feed to egg ratio... they are fluffy and sweet and slow

Hi, this is an egg that one of my 2 Isa browns laid today, both girls lay nice big and dark eggs. The one in in the picture isn't the darkest by far, one of the darkest eggs I got from the hens went under a broody last year and hatched into a pretty cockerel. My question is that if I get a BCM hen and breed it with my cockerel( when it's older) will I get a hen that lays really dark eggs? I've read that egg color comes mostly from the fathers side.

Here's a picture of the dad(up front) and his son that came out of the very dark Isa brown egg(black one in the back) and then there's Big Mac( orange roo in back, no relation).

You could try it but you would likely be better off getting a dark egg laying breed and not crossing to the ISA Brown.
