Dark Egg Breeds Thread

Wheaten.

Number one rule is about the Cinnamon Triangle. Number two is the pearl/pink shanks.

Take a look at this Wheaten - Would you believe he is? Because he is indeed a Wheaten. Came out of Wheatens, has a cinnamon triangle, has pink shanks, just. . . A LOT of red.

Oh, wow thanks for posting that picture Ilia. I was just assuming that the cinnamon color on his legs had something to do with the fact that he came out of BCMs-not that it is a BCM characteristic but I had never seen that on a Wheaten before.

You are going to have the darkest eggs of all when your pullets from the hatch pictured in post #21 start to lay. Those are some of the darkest BCM eggs I've ever seen

Maybe they will lay early

I am still waiting! I only got 4 pullets out of there, and 1 died, leaving me with 3! I am watching and waiting.

Beautiful eggs Kim!

I must know, how on Earth are your girls laying? My 2 girls that are pullets from this spring just up and quit laying about a month ago. Not molting, just quit laying.

Thanks!
They are actually laying very well, those that are of laying age and not molting anyway. I have several older gals that are still molting but they should be nearing the end. The birds that are laying up a storm right now are my Blue Coppers that I hatched yearly this year, all but one are 8 mos. and the youngest is 6 mos. old, the youngest one lays the best, an egg every other day. The Black Copper babies from Greenfire Farms should be laying in about a month. I suspect that one of them is going to start earlier than that, she has a nice big fat red comb and her wattles are nice and red. She is one of the 2 biggest pullets from that batch. I have seen her in the nest box snooping around for the last week or so, then she jumps out and runs outside clucking up a storm, then right back into the nest box, scratch, cluck and back outside and so on. They will be 5 mos. on Dec 14th. Hoping they rock me into the New Year with lots of pretty dark eggs.

My mossy/partridge Black Copper Marans give these:

The two of them lay essentially identical eggs. The others are all across the board. Spices stained hands from chicken feed.

Really nice color MM!
What line is your BCM flock from?

And... what spices are you using in the feed? Tell us

Thank you, I actually chose the photo that lightened the egg somewhat - note the glare on my hand as well from the low, early-morning sun. I was cold and lazy and didn't collect eggs the evening before. Putting it behind my body darkened it and I could n't post that.

There is no line to speak of, they are at least three years (unknown generations) removed from anybody's stock and they originated from everybody's. This is my first generation with them, all the more reason I could not rightfully attach anybody's name.

Spices: Paprika, cinnamon, turmeric.

If anybody has any thoughts regarding spices or other such supplements, I would love to hear that. Mostly I have to peruse through parrot and finch fanciers' writings for anything like this.
