Hen with 3 day old chicks began today with dark green diarrhea that smells bad! Has had normal brooding and fine til today. She has not been outside and only in box. Has not pooped in nest until today. There is areas of poop and 2 babies got splashed with it and i cleaned them off. I need to know what she needs ... have no idea why she would suddenly get sick. She acts normal.. doesnt act sick yet.
Thank you.

Broodies usually have terrible smelly green poops which they have normally when they slip out of the nest to run and eat a bite and have a potty break. She may now be pooping since she doesn’t want to leave the chicks. Did the eggs all hatch? I would let them out, so she can start showing the chicks around to find food and water. Probiotics in the water or giving her some plain Greek yogurt with cultures might help.

Thank you so very much! I was scared she had something wrong and the babies would be without her!
She hatched 7 eggs. Originally she had 8 but along the way when candling one had died. We were shocked that she was ready to set at 11 mos of age. She will be 1 year old and officially a hen this weekend. So far she has been an excellent momma. When we found the green mess in one end of their nest... we moved them to their new home that we had for them. We had a small feeder and waterer in the nest box. It was large and she had her nest in the back and we had the feeder in the front on flat wood surface no bedding. Yesterday was the first time she ever did anything in that box this whole time!
But we moved them to the next area we had for them so that everything was clean!! Have a regular size nest box with no board across front so chix can easily go in and out. Food/water area slightly raised to prevent sand or wood shavings to get in them. The babies love love love it... they hop right up and just run around to jump off and do it again. So cute! One baby is tiny... but acts as happy as the rest! There is always 1 that wont mind.. and this one when she wants them to get under her or wants them to stop running around the pen and go in box she will do her little clucks and all but that one does what she wants... finally she will go to the the chick... give it a peck or two and make deep hard cluck sounds and that baby hauls it back to the group. Haha so entertaining. The pen area they have now is 4' x 6'. Also put a small bath box beside nest box for mom if she needs to relax in the dirt. Haha
These babies love this new space to run around. Next stop will be in a special pen we have made inside.the run with the others. Have a small door in it we can open when she is ready to mingle with the others and still have their own space as well.
Anxious to see how they turn out. Mom is a black jersey giant. And the roo is a lt brahma. All 7 chix are black with yellow bellies.. haha cant see the yellow unless you pick them up.
Thank you again! All chix we have raised were shipped to us and this is our first time to have our own!
