What is a Dark RIR. I just cancelled my order from McMurry because they only have production reds. I was told Whelp had them. I called a coupe of mins ago and asked what the difference was in their RIR and their Dark RIR. The lady said they were but true RIR's the differenc was the Dark RIR was darker and a little bigger. She said they both were trur RIR's and that production reds were even bigger and only a rust color. She said both of their RIR's had the brick type body and the dark color and the green tails. HELP because I want a true RIR to make eggs and chicks. I also want to do some sex-links for friends. Thanks Dave27889 Eastern N.C.

Haven't seen Welp's dark RIRs in person. I have hatchery RIRs AND breeder RIRs. The dark ones are much, much larger, calmer and much more beautiful. Here is one of my "Amazon-hens"

Here is one of my hatchery girls (only one left...the other two died from internal laying) This girl was my darkest hatchery girl:

These are giant girls. They are also quiet, calm, sweet and non-aggressive to the rest of the flock. I love them so much. One day, I may get more eggs to hatch to get another rooster, but my source doesn't have this breed anymore. geareduplyn (Gary) has some similar to mine, very dark and lovely.

I agree, there is a night and day difference between production reds and "real" RIR's. Our RIR's are calm and very good natured. We started out with just a few and like them so much there is about 30 or 40 in the brooder box now.

Whoa, thats so weird. I was coming to this section to ask this SAME question.

I ordered some normal rhode island reds from welp last spring and they were very dark, and layed lots of eggs. People often thought I had heritage breed. I think I am going to purchase some darks from Welp and maybe some normal.

Tail angle and quill color is a big issue with the so called dark Reds from the hatchery, and seldom do you get the dark horn on the legs in the hatchery birds. This particular pen is Mohawk,Rademacher,Nelson, and Anthony Ashley Pullets topped off with a Reese Male
