Darn Opposable Thumbs of Raccoons

Thank you for posting pictures. I'm still new to the chicken thing but I try my best to apply everything i learn from these forums. My girls have been outside for a week now since Friday and haven't figured out who was stressed more from the move (chickens or me?). The pictures people post of their encounters with predators help bring these concerns to life. It is reassuring to know all the efforts gone to give the girls a secure home are worth it.

Today's Update: Success, the masked bandit known for eating chicks/eggs was captured last night. At first I wasn't sure this one had large enough feet to match the prints on the egg doors. But after he was ready for his dirtnap, a forensics examination of his front paws indicated a possible match.

Latest Update: Just the day after I caught Ricky Raccoon, I caught the Matriarch of the clan.

Way to go!

I don't think we have coons here but since my girl is inside due to the diseases in the commercial chicken houses less than one quarter mile away, I am saved from having to find out.

Yep coons will keep trying untill they get in. I have caught over 20 this spring, just caught 2 last night.

Keep that trap set , sure you have more/

I keep some of my supplies in a black plastic trash can outside my run and I have found pawprints on it sometimes when it has rained and made the ground muddy. I really don't know what kind of animal is doing it, but they only seem to be messing with the trash can. I have found no attempts to dig into my totally enclosed wire run, yet.

Update: Arrgghh........the Coons didn't get into the chickens last night-----they just wiped out my sweet corn patch. The corn was just about a week from being ready. They only ate one or two ears, the rest they pulled down, stripped back, took a bite and discarded. Well, the chickens got a treat from the discards. And I could already taste the feld fresh corn............darn!
