David has led an interesting life. When she arrived from Meyer Hatchery, I thought she was the BLRW cockerel of the order. (Boy, was I wrong!) Her first few days were full of cuddles and exploring and just being a chicklet. But at some point, she hurt her hip. She limped along and eventually healed up, but she was a little gimpy, a lot clumsy, and still doesn’t turn on a dime. When the rest of the Littles moved out to the coop, she moved right along with them, if a little slower and more cautiously.

She can jump up to roost with the other girls (we had to get rid of Flash, the “actual” horndog), but couldn’t easily get up to The Loft out in the run. So, hubby built her a grand staircase. Which everyone LOVES! The treads are made of 2x10s, so they’re nice and wide. I made a roost with the scraps. Now, my girl spends most of her day lounging on the stairs, on The Loft, on “her” roost, or in my plastic chair that I keep in the run. Lately, she’s been hopping up on the roost and sitting close to me. Or I’ll move my chair over to the steps to sit next to her. Well today, she decided that she wanted to sit on my lap! So she very carefully (and very clumsily) stepped from the roost up onto my leg. She preened, she looked around, she talked nonstop, and then, she took a nap! And when I say nap, I mean power-nap! She tucked her head under her wing and started snoring! (No, she didn’t really snore...)

She hasn’t been able to do that since she was a few days old. But she sure made an effort today!
