Day 17/18/19 here... CHICK PICS!!

Congrats on the new babies, Cara! So, you got one Blue Orp that is very light - should be a pretty adult. What are the other 3 looking like? From my hatch on Thanksgiving I got one dark blue and 2 black, so I'm really hoping 1 of them is a cockerel and the other 2 pullets.

Sounds like you got some nice birds even though your hatch rate wasn't what you were hoping for. It's really hard to get great hatches with shipped eggs, but look on the bright side, maybe soon you can just hatch your own eggs and don't have to have many more shipped to you!!!

Cara, I can't remember, but did I send you six Orps and one or two Ameraucanas? Are any besides the light one from my eggs? The reason I'm asking is that I'm sort of trying to get an idea of the rates from my girls and whose chicks hatch better, even among the shipped ones.

Cynthia, I have two Orpingtons and an Ameraucana from your eggs. One of the Orpingtons is the very light one, it looks silvery white, kind of a platinum, with a yellow breast. I'll see if I can take a photo of it to send you. That was one of Skye's, and the other one was Velvet's. Velvet's one is the same colour as one of the Catalpa ones, a darker blue. Then I have one from Catalpa that is a very dark blue, almost black on its back, but it is lighter where it meets the yellow. The Ameraucana is a dark blue too.

I ended up with 2 Orpingtons and an Ameraucana from your eggs, and 2 Orpingtons from Catalpa, and then one of my own Sultans. I had 6 dead in the shell, and the rest (6) didn't develop.

go figure.

I'm keeping a complete record of each time I check on mine, that way if I start to second guess myself, I can say hey look everything was fine.

I've been reading that Guide To Better Hatches, there are just so many things that can effect hatchability you wouldn't believe it. I'm wondering how chickens haven't become extinct.

I'm not saying this to be negative or discourage you, just saying keep trying and try different breeds and see what happens. Some breeds require just a little different set of temps and Humidity. How are we supposed to know? We don't, we just keep trying.

Now, in 15 days when I'm in your position, you'll need to repeat this info to me. OK?

Good luck and keep trying. Once all those fuzzy butts are grown, you won't be able to resist.

I'm already plotting the next hatch

These guys are precious though, all different colours.
