Day 18.....Lockdown

The above picture is fat side, Air cell visable
Day 18 starts tomorrow....I am still alittle worried, babies aren't taking up the full shell like my other hatch....I'm going to wait til day 19 to crank up the humidity ...

Candle day 17

This is the skinny end of the egg, My last hatch at this stage it was all black.. My temps and humidity have been stable..
And yes, all that we candled have movement...

You may want to wait until they pip to raise the humidity. Good luck! Leslie

Yep, that's the plan!! My two EE's look to be a tad further along, my only concern is having to jump into lockdown for them and it being to soon for the others..
I do have to correct what I said tho, I said my temps have been stable and they have but they have been lower then what I did with my last hatch, woke up a few times to the fire having gone out and the house temp low which lowered the temp in my bator... I sincerely hope that's my problem and I am just going to have a late hatch...

My first hatch :) Wednesday is day 21 for several, Saturday for the rest. I've heard several success stories from people hatching in their egg turners. I'm afraid to lock down for the first set, not leaving enough time for the others.

I know the risks of leaving them in the turners, but which is the worst evil? Handing turning the latter set, and opening the incubator 3 times a day or leaving them in the turner, and the first set hatching in the turner? I'm quite torn. And obviously didn't think my way through this when I set a staggered hatch. I simply read people had success with staggered hatches. Oy!

Morning of day 20 and I woke up to two freshly hatched wyandottes and 3 pipped araucanas. When I went to bed there were only two pips, so they have made a lot of progress through the night!

Anyway, from what I have read about staggered hatches turning is most essential for the first 14 days. If it were me I would take them off the auto turner and hand turn until the first pip, then stop turning and raise the humidity.

From my experiences it seems like the more you worry and over think this last bit, the worse it will go, because you won't be able to resist interfering.

were the new eggs shipped? I use a practice with shipped eggs where I don't turn them for the first 2 days in the incubator. so I would say, no harm in not turning at first...

you could remove the turner, and move your eggs to egg cartons. That way, you could prop up 1 side of the egg carton with the new eggs. and leave the lockdown eggs flat.

once your lockdown eggs start pipping however, it's important not to open the incubator to turn anymore. you don't want to cause a sudden humidity drop when you have pips open to the air...
