Day 20...Six of Eight Hatched! Hatch Completed PIC

All five Ameraucanas, besides the one that apparently died before Day18, hatched on their own, Charlotte's babies included, the last one just this morning. One Blue Orp has pipped, but the last one is still making me wait. Today is Day 21. Seems like I have two blacks and three blues, but I won't commit to that till they're completely fluffy. Those dark blues really can fool you!

I'm sure of one of the Ameraucana's sex already-that boy came out with a prominent wide comb right out of the gate! Never saw a more definite boy in this breed right away. I do see at least a couple that look girly to me, but you never really know with this breed for a few weeks for sure.

Don't hold out much hope for the last Orp chick. The shell was getting that dessicated look to it and so we pipped the end. Too much blood for this stage nearing the end of Day 21 and the chick, although breathing, appears not to have absorbed the yolk or be the correct size. We taped up the end most of the way after moistening the membrane a little and put it back in the bator, but I think it was destined to be a "dead in the shell" one, unfortunately. At least, the other one is still in the running, the pip a little larger now.

Awwww, that is so sad Cyn, Hope the other one does well. I am up to 10 chicks from my broodies, looks like five are BR, couple of Brown Leghorns, couple of BO, and number ten not sure?

The pipped Orp hatched, a blue and a big 'un. The second one that we thought wasn't quite right, wasn't. We finally went in when we no longer saw it breathing and the innards were on the outside of the body, poor thing. That's never happened to me in incubation and it was a splash, too, dang it. Sometimes I feel like giving up on this breed variety, even though I love them. Gee, I can hatch Ameraucanas all day long and Barred Rocks, too, but the ones I really, really want to be successful at, I'm falling short here. Seems like others have better luck with my Blue Orp eggs than I do, LOL!
