Day 20: The hatching begins (Under broody hen)

We've come a long way in the last 48 hours. We now have 6 chicks all fluffy and bright eyed, running around and eating and another 2 trying to hatch. One's nearly out the other is either stuck or is having a rest so not too sure on that one. The other 3 I can't even see so might be hatched or might be still in the shells. Biscuit has been an amazing first time mamma and so she's been getting some extra treats for her good work 😍

Congrats on your successful hatch! Mum did well!

Glad things are going so well.

May I ask, what is a saddled air sac?
A saddled air sac is when the side of the inner membrane comes away from the wall of the shell. So an extra pocket of air forms. This can make it really hard for the chicks to hatch as they don't know which area to 'pip' into.

It generally happens in shipped/posted eggs since the postage system can be a bumpy ride for the little eggies. Most of mine had saddled air sacs, but most have also appeared to have made it out alive <3

This is what a saddled air sac is like:

Thanks. Do you think that would happen to shipped button quail eggs too? That's what I'm planning on getting.
Yes, it can happen to any eggs bought via the mail. You can let them rest pointed end down for 24 hours before setting them in an incubator or under a broody to hope that the air sac reattaches to the shell or at least floats to where it is supposed to sit naturally. It's the price paid for buying shipped eggs. No where local sells hatching eggs for me, so I had no alternative, and many other people don't either. If you do buy online, make sure to buy from a breeder/seller than will make sure they are packed VERY carefully <3 Best of luck with them :)
