I am at day 21 today, incubating 3 eggs only. Its my first time and the first time i used the homemade incubator. So i messed up. The temperature was too high for 15 days (103fn) and the humidity was low all the way 0-22% (i threw water on the eggs lately so i think i provided a little more humidity than just 22%. I could not stop the incubating progress to set up the incubator again, so i thought i d finish first. Now i know and the next time will obviously be better (temperature and humidity) and i hope i will get some new chicks then.

But my question is, what do i do now? I look at the eggs, and the one i really hoped it hatches, is moving....... OR i am beeing paranoid and just saw the natural movements of myself when i was holding the incubator. Do i just wait without turning them? How many days should i give them? I throw water on them to make the shell easier to crack, is what i am doing right? Please dont tell me just to throw the eggs away, i still have a hope for them, that may happen eventually anyway, if there is something i should to to make sure there is a chick in there or not except candling please let me know (i did not candle them because the light i d use is burned, lol)

I am so un-organized like always, that if a chick hatches, it would die because i have no brooder set up, yet lol. I will build one fast when something comes to life

edit:I read somewhere a trick in which you throw the egg in a warm water jar (100fn) and if it floats there is life or development? Does that work or will destroy the egg.

edit:i want an egg to hatch so much but i had to pay more attention during the progress.. now its late..........is nt it

This is what I did with my hacked up first incubation, first tap the shell with your finger whilst holding it to your ear to see if you can hear the chick tapping inside trying to get out, if nothing is heard get a needle and make a small hole in the egg sac side of the egg, enough to get a warm / damp Q-Tip through - see if you can see anywhere inside where the chick may have pierced the air sac if not just moisten it a little and put a bit of pressure on the membrane if you see movement then let me know as you may have to get the chick out manually - I doubt it will make it as they are usually very weak if they have got to this stage.
If you do need to get it out take some tweezers and remove a little more of the shell where the air sac was be careful not to damage the membrane as this could sever a vein running into the chick - if you see any blood STOP and dab with the q-tip and leave.

Try that for now.

UPDATE! HELP

I can freakin HEAR the chick!!!!!! This is romantic and gross. It feels weird.

Ok the egg is not cracked yet, what i did was make sounds of chicks (lol) and i spoke to them (lol) then i grabbed them and stick my ear on each egg in hopes to hear something. And i hear something from one egg. It could be the air in the egg or whatever you might say, but to me it sounds like a beak.

In the conditions i incubated, the egg shell could be too hard to crack, right? In that case should i help by cracking the egg or somehow?

When should i just open all the eggs and see how the incubation went. I have absolutely nothing to do with those eggs but wait and i feel weird.

If its moving and cheeping just leave it alone !!! Spray it a little if you have got a water spray - not too much as this may absorb straight into the shell and cause the chick to drown if he is a fighter he will get out himself.

(very sorry for using caps, cant express myself right now)

It is a wonderful thing isn't it !! He sounds very strong as I said in a previous reply, it could take up to 24 hours to hatch - but I wish you the best of luck !! Keep me updated.

I am up,been up almost all nite.I have the same deal, some eggs r moving, but nothing happened yet.It is my first time.I am scared!

I had experienced the same thing on Friday night - it was my second attempt - the first 3 I incubated stayed in for 25 days then I just threw them away, so this time I changed my plan.
I was using a styrofoam incubator which was a real pain in the arse for keeping its humidity and temperature, being it was a manual turn too it would take nearly an hour to re stabilize.
I tried incubating another 13 the second time and they were staggered too, but then I got to day 21 for 4 of my 13 and the still looked like they were on day 16 when I candled them so I decided that I needed a new incubator - so I managed to get a really good second hand R-Com 20 and that has been brilliant so far - well when I say that I have not had a chick hatch yet but I nearly saved one of my fours life !
I was sat in my bathroom with a weak chick in the palm of my hand - massaging his tummy and giving the occasional soft warm blow into his beak - he managed to hang on for 6 or 7 hours before he eventually passed away.
For newbies it is always disheartening when you cannot help but you want to try, they do say that a weak chick is better left to pass away than to struggle on and end up being a weak chicken or have disabilities.

The more experienced we all become the better and more rewarding the hatches will be.

Good luck to you both
