day 22 1/2 chick cracked shell a few hours ago, a piece fell, but no hole in membrane, is that ok

Yes, my hygrometers, which I've never tested, 1 digital says 65, 1 says 69, the hygrometers are inside the incubator, there is condensation on the window, which, doesn't surprise me, as I keep my house like 66 or 67 in the winter. The last time, all of the chicks appeared to have drowned, but, as I learned, this was due to too high humidity the first 18 days, not the last 3. I went out and bought an accurate? and another one, not sure of its name. Eventually, I'll understand all of this, but until then I need medicated waiting! LOL

I here you!! I just hatched ducks for the first time and OMG I have stressed so bad the past two days!! out of 5 that went into lockdown two are in the brooder, one pipped wrong end, the other never came out died in shell pipping and then the other pipped and popped out and then I went to check later and was just DEAD!! then I pulled him out and there was blobs of bloodclotty stuff, he musta hit a vein or something and bled to death poor lil ducky..... UGGGGG sometimes you just cant win with incubating as much as we want to be broody hens we just arent!
Happy New year to you!!! I pray you wake up to another beautiful chicky!! what breed is in the bator?? can you post pics???
Its nice because so many people read and look through threads for help, visuals are GREAT at helping!!!

ENJOY your night!!

The breed is a white silkie. We started last year, with 2, for 4H, well, oh well. We are hooked. We have 14 chickens in the custom made coop my husband made, adding another coop in the spring. This is a sickness, but we love them. Actually, we have 3 Lavender Ameracaunas, 2 Easter eggers, and 9 silkies, not including our 2, 3 or whatever new ones. By the way, the little one is making progress, slow, but, is working on it!! So, I'm sure I won't sleep much (you know, gotta keep checking!). Nothing else yet from the other 5, of which I'm sure at least 2 or so were alive at lockdown (I didn't candle them a lot). The name of the little one hatching "Eve", since that is when it is hatching - hope it is a girl. Thanks again and Happy New Year.

your welcome!! we have a white silk pair Romeo & Juliet as well as two blue splash silks!!

There is not enough information for me to definitely say what is wrong.

The inner membrane is punctured on day 19. This is when the pip gets its first breath of air. A live pip means that this membrane was breached on time.

However it sounds like the humidity is either too low or the hatching temps are to high, or a combination of the two.

Low humidity or temps too high results in a leathery outer membrane and this results in the pip dying from exhaustion during the hatching process or soon afterwards. Under low humidity (or drying temps) the egg shell will stick to the embryo and this keeps the pip from freely turning inside the egg to cut open the shell with its egg tooth.

Think of it like the egg has its own amniotic fluid and that low humidity depletes this fluid.

Well, the little one finally hatched, all is well, it is doing great, the other 2 picked on it a little, because I put it in the brooder 2 days later. We now have 3 adorable silkie chicks and are very happy that something finally hatched. Thanks for your help and information that I'll be able to use in the future too.
