Hello all :frow this is my first time incubating and 4 of my 6 silkie eggs have hatched so far - two on day 21 and two on day 22.They're all doing great, but the two left in the incubator have yet to even pip on day 23. I was beside myself with worry, so I candled them today and took some pictures, which I'll include here. Sorry they're not better quality, I wanted to be as quick as possible. No movement from either and no internal pip. How long do I give them? Or, judging by the pictures, is there no hope for them? :(

this one looked ok, until I turned it around and saw what appears to be unabsorbed yolk and that circular thing...what is that?

this one is just dark all the way round, with a large air cell.

I am also a new bee at 17th day of hatching. Did you try float test in water? Check eggs carefully for cracks or holes. If you do not have any then gently keep eggs in warm water close to 100F(close to heat in the incubator). If eggs float and shake slowly, you can wait till 25th day. I would suggest please take experts decision in this case.

Nice, nearly lockdown for you! :D No, I haven't tried the float test yet. I might try that later or tomorrow if I don't see any pips. That red circular thing is very worrying though, does anyone know what it is/what it means?

First off Welcome to BYC :welcome
I'm pretty sure those last two eggs might be quitters. If you can't see movement then I'm sorry to say they are dead. This is common with incubation. Some chicks fully develop, but never make it out of the shell.

Thank you. I shouldn't have got my hopes up and expected them all to hatch. Shall I give it to around day 25 or so in the incubator do you think?

If you can't see movement, I would cracked the eggs open and do an egg autopsy to see the development of the eggs. If you leave the eggs in there too long, they will start to stink and possibly explode. I had a egg that died and rotted under one of my Muscovy girls. On day 36 of he laying I took all remaining eggs and as soon as I grabbed this rotted egg, it EXPLODED! It reaked so bad! I wanted to throw up! But those eggs were never candled or touched. So it could have been rotting for a while. But the duckling was fully developed with the yolk still not absorbed!

red circular rings are mostly Quitters. What was latest update on it?

I've incubated two batches of 12 eggs...I agree with Nyla, I would open them up. I usually start in the air pocket end...and like she said be ready for horrible stink, do it in the bathroom with the fan on, or outside...they can really smell bad. It seems sad to do, no-one wants to see a dead chick, but it will help you see when the progress ended, and what might have been the cause.

Oh my, that's awful. Do you candle them now though after that? Were the other eggs not affected? I'm going to open them up today I think, day 25. I'm just so heartbroken because the one with the saddle shaped air cell was fully developed and looked ready to hatch:hit

I don't think it's a blood ring, it doesn't go around the circumference of the egg. I don't know what it is, but it doesn't look good. They're both still in the incubator right now, but I think it's safe to say they're gone :( I tried the float test and they bobbed around a bit and then stopped.

Yeah, I've had everyone telling me not to crack them open, that it'll be too upsetting etc. but I need to know. The pocket end as in the wider air cell end? I think I'll opt for opening them outside then haha I've heard they just smell like boiled eggs though? I candled them both again today, the one looks the same - a large dark shadow then large air cell, the other doesn't look very good at all though.

Only the one egg was rotten. I don't candle eggs that my Muscovy's hatch themselves. But when I incubate eggs in my incubator, I candle eggs. I candle eggs the day of incubation starts, to make sure : all air cells are intact, no cracks in eggs, and to see if the egg is damaged inside. I also candle on days 10, 25, and 33. Muscovy eggs take 35 days to hatch.

Also the way your candling the eggs isn't a way I'd suggest. I would candle the eggs keeping them in the pointy end down position and placing the light at the big end where the air cells are. This way you won't detach the air cells.
