We got our 6 black star chicks on Saturday - they hatched on Friday evening and were about 22 hours old when they came to us. They are, of course, absolutely adorable little fuzzballs! The kids love them, my husband and I love them, and the dogs love them. My one girl dog (Lucy) is a bit too fixated on them though and I've had to watch her very closely. We had one close call with her yesterday. My 6yo took a chick out of the cage (without permission) while I was making dinner and it found it's way to the floor, where my waiting dog quickly snatched her up. I screamed at her to drop and she promptly did. I don't know if she would have actually hurt it (she didn't - and when she finds mice, she kills them right away), but I didn't want to chance it. The other two dogs (Jack and Bear) are much more mellow about the birds. Bear is mildly afraid of them (he's a big baby) and Jack (our puppy) is very curious but not fixated like Lucy.
Anyhow. So far things are going well (aside from the mishap). The chicks are happy and warm and eating, drinking, and pooping fine. They are so fun to watch and they're starting to get excited when I come to the cage. A few will jump into my hand on their own already. Here's hoping they continue to all grow strong and healthy!
