Cindi I agree with you that bullying happens all around, and it's always hurtful.
However, I understand the symbolism behind the whole day of silence thing. High School was horrible for my gay friends, and I understand why one would want to make a statement about feeling silenced by society.
I don't think raising support for one group necessarily detracts from other groups, in fact I think it might have the opposite effect.

I love our arguments though, I think you and I are politically as far apart as we could be, and we always seem to get along anyway and have fun arguing nicely

Oh I dunno on the detracting or not detracting. I just think in general people should quit being so stinkin self centered they think the world revolves around them and THEN we wouldn't even be having this conversation...which I too am SOOOOO enjoying with ya OT

It's just not a gay straight black white big little pink blue kinda arguement...it's JUST common decency...or the lack thereof in our society. I'd seriously discipline my kid for bullying AND make them apologize AND make them serve at a soup kitchen for 8 hours...if everybody else would do the same.....IF IF IF Know what I mean?

I know whatcha mean though, the bullying is symptomatic of a much bigger issue.

Heinlein (my favorite author and secret true love) always said that the decline of a society could be identified by a lack of common courtesy and the widespread occurrence of dirty public restrooms

I had to do diversity training to be a crossing guard. The whole point of diversity training is something everyone should know by the time they are five years old. Don't be a jerk, treat others with respect, and be a decent human being. My dh put it even more simply, he said "don't be a dumb..."

If people could follow simple, kindergarten level rules for behaviour, we wouldn't need things like DOS, diversity training and hate crime laws.
