Hey guys, I'm a first time chick mum and my first chick pipped last night on Day 18 and hatched this morning at around 8 am. The chick hasn't been able to stand up since and it's been 5 hours. It's been chirping actively and walking about on it's hock. Should I be worrying? I've attached a few images for you guys to see. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi, we had the exact same thing with our chick. He wouldnt stand at all, we checked his legs and found he had a slipped tendon at the knee joint. After lots of research we followed the instructions to pull back the leg and push the tendon(which you can feel moving) back over the back of the joint then wrap it in a bandage wrap and leave for 3-5 days, changing if necessary if it starts to get tight and putting in a little chick chair(we used a pot noodle pot and vetwrap), we gave vitamins and extra b12 and after 3 days we took it off and he stood up! Very wobbly at first but after a few hours he was running around like all chicks are and is now 6 weeks old and perfect. Hope this helps.

Hi @STACEYH and @Boobumpbeanbear, thank you both for your kind inputs!

I'm happy to inform you that my chick is now standing normally now and even saw it do a sprint across one end of the brooder to another this morning! I think it would have beaten Usain Bolt if it were human!

Guess I was being an overly anxious first-time mum! Well it's all good experience. I have 8 more that's schedule to hatch and 3 have just pipped this morning. I had to assist one out at 2am today and it hatched at 7am. So far so good and the first 7 are eating and happily exploring the brooder.

Have a great day you both!

That is great news. Congratulations and good luck with all the new babies. 😁
Thank you! Unfortunately I also have some bad news. I've got 3 remaining eggs that's on day 22 and I'm not sure whether they're gonna hatch. One of my chicks unfortunately copped a slipped tendon yesterday morning. I've kept it in a chick sling but am not sure whether it's gonna make it through as it's not really eating much. I had to do a full assisted hatch yesterday morning for the most recent newborn as it was malpositioned with it's feet over the head. It's also smaller than most of my other 9 chicks but it got up on it's feet really quickly and is eating well.

THANK YOU! Yeah and I just realized my brooder is not gonna be big enough for my 15 chicks!! 🤦‍♀️
I've extended the brooder. Now the chicks use the extension as a kinda sprinting track! They dash from the old side of the brooder to the new side and then dash back again.. road-runner style! And they do it multiple times a day! It's absolutely hilarious and extremely cute!!

I fed mushed up hard boiled egg yolk to our little chick and gave kiddy vitamins(no iron) for a few days while he was in his chair, it seemed to help boost his strength.
