Day-old Chick not Standing

Hi @STACEYH and @Boobumpbeanbear, thank you both for your kind inputs!

I'm happy to inform you that my chick is now standing normally now and even saw it do a sprint across one end of the brooder to another this morning! I think it would have beaten Usain Bolt if it were human!

Guess I was being an overly anxious first-time mum! Well it's all good experience. I have 8 more that's schedule to hatch and 3 have just pipped this morning. I had to assist one out at 2am today and it hatched at 7am. So far so good and the first 7 are eating and happily exploring the brooder.

Have a great day you both!

Chicks are often wobbly for the first day. Most often it's nothing to worry about.

If you feel they're not as active as the others, a little vitamin boost will not hurt them. We use Sav-A-Chick products (vitamins and electrolytes) for newly hatched chicks, and we RARELY have an activity level issue with any of our chicks.

Well done with the full assist sounds like it's a little feisty one and fingers crossed for the other 3.
THANK YOU! I'm glad I read up on the article on assisted hatching. Brilliant info that was!

Little Fiesty is doing well! It's the one in the foreground in the pic below.. he looks a bit wet as I had to add a bit of vegetable oil during the assist as he was a bit shrink-wrapped. The second one from the right in the background is the one that had the slipped tendon.. now off his crutches and standing! :wee

No activity for the remaining 3... I'll candle them again tonight to see whether they've pipped but I'm anticipating the worse.. :hmm

Oh they are all so gorgeous, I love baby chicks. Well done you have done so well with them. Good luck with the last 3.

Thank you! That's very encouraging! Not looking good for the remaining 3.. but I guess I should be happy that I had success with 10 so far!

Some of the chicks are developing their feathers with black specks across a white background.. another has a black Mohawk with yellow fluff. It'll be really exciting to see how they will look like when they grow up!

It's hard when some don't make it, even with 10 surviving you always feel abit disappointed but 10 is great and they will definitely keep you busy.
Can't wait to see pics of them all as they grow.

Hey @Boobumpbeanbear, just thought I'll post some pics of my remaining 5 chicks. I sold 5 of the 10 that were left. Unfortunately the lame chick didn't make it in the end but the remaining 5 are strong and healthy. They will be 6 weeks old on Monday! 😄

I am just posting so some newbie will know in the future. Chicks will be unable to stand for the first day and still learning to walk well into the second day. It is nothing to worry about.

yeah thanks for that. They were still a bit wobbly 5 days in and only really started running about in the second week. :)

Oh they are so lovely, you have done so well. I think i see at least a couple of cockerels maybe in the first pic, the 2 darker brown ones. My little one is now 11 weeks and started his first crows last week, very cute.
Good luck as they grow up.
