Day old chicks will be here tomorrow! Couple questions....

When ordering chicks, I always call, or go to PO in person. Speak directly to post master, as well as leaving a post card with my name and address and phone number on it, asking them to call me immediately no matter the time of day or night as soon as they arrive. Even with these safe guards in place, it pays to be pro active. My chicks missed every single connecting flight at every single shipping hub, and if I had not been proactive, my chicks would have sat for an other overnight, and I'd have picked up a box of dead chicks on Sat morning. (They left hatchery on Tuesday.) I took a chance driving to the closest sorting hub, and was blessed by arriving at the same time as an employee. This hub is locked down, and not accessible to the public, but she made a few phone calls, and got me in to get my chicks.

x2! Check back, in person, and find out where they are, and their next stop. It's worth it to drive a little to have them home a day sooner, and only three shipped is tricky enough with ideal conditions! Mary

Hi ,
95 degrees is too hot for that brooder . keep it about 90° bird. should even be fine at 85.
give them an hour or so to warm up after you get them and then go ahead and give them water and Nutridrench on arrival.
then Nutridrench water and food right after that.
yes the food you got is just fine. it will be fine for them. you don't need medicated, you already paid for the vaccination.
Oh and while you're at it ,go into Walmart and get one of their digital hygrometers at $9. it's a great little hygrometer. put it in the bottom of the brooder and it will tell you how much humidity you have and what the temperature is. I have a bunch of them and they work great.
Best,
Karen

Why? Everywhere I read says 95 for the first week and decrease 5 degrees every week....

Agreed with 3RC. The "they say" information is "too much heat". It is a guideline, and many folks have found that the chicks do better with less heat. Even better than a heat lamp at any temperature is a heating pad cave brooder. It mimics the heat provided by a broody hen, allowing the chicks to duck into the cave for a quick warm up before returning to the rest of the brooder which remains at the ambient temp.

I'm glad yours arrived healthy!! I am still holding my breath that our three make it OK. My tracking says tomorrow. When I called the PostOffice yesterday, they said that live animals come early in the morning only. We could not find the Poly-ViSol without Iron. Everyone had it WITH Iron, but no one had it without. I do have the Nutri-Drench on hand now.

Did I understand correctly that I should give the babies one drop by mouth daily & more often if there is a weak one???
