DAYOLD BREAD FOR GOATS??????

the woman we got our miniature donkey from fed her animals bread from the bread store, day old bread.
she had several donkeys with terrible feet, floundered, and necks that were very large and one that was broken over. if you have ever seen that you would be as upset as I was. My jenny I bought still has a wide neck, it never gets smaller and we give her hay, and lots of fresh water, treats are carrots, apples, and when I worm her she gets wormer paste of a triscut cracker.
never bread, ever.
She was pregnant when I got her and when the baby was born he lasted 24 hours, our vet told us that having such poor nutrition was a big factor in the baby not surviving.
They fed them lots of bread though, they said because they had run short on hay...
I agree about the goats too, bloat will kill goats.
I personally do not give bread to any of my animals to be on the safe side.

That's horrible. I have never heard of such a thing. Is it because they horses were given JUST bread??? As a treat type I don't understand. I guess there is so much of the "Don't give this...Don't give that..." "Give this...Give that..." "This is o.k.....This is not..." It's so hard to tell anymore. It's amazing sometimes that the animals can have the feed that is made for them, even though the same things might be in there that were told not to feed our animals.
I am not disagreeing here, Like I said I have never heard about not giving horses bread. And I would never give them something I KNEW was hurting them.
Now as for the goats....My mom has a pair of goats that are going to 10 years old and another one that is almost 7. They each get 3 slices of bread a day. They have since she first got them. They are healthy, lively wonderful goats.

That part I understand completely. I hope everyone realized it wasn't talking about ONLY feeding our horses (or any animal for that matter) ONLY bread. That was more of a treat for them.
I was trying to tell the OP that we do give our goats a little bread. And it got turned into horses. Which I hope the OP doesn't think I highjacked the thread.

run-a-muck

I hear you. Giving anything a treat is OK. I know any treats in this world almost should never be a soul diet. This applies to all critters.

Me, I am just that--don't feed junk to animals type person...LOL
Most of us have our level of what we consider a treat and such...no biggie at all. Moderation in anything is key and boy that sure applies to alot of interests these days!

I farm for a business and to me any foods NOT needed by the animals is not worth a chance to me to feed. So that is why I adopted the "feed what they truly need" attitude.

by the way---I love your ranch name! Sounds like my place

Mine too! They love animal crackers, potato chips, cake, sugar cubes, etc... If it's junk, they want to eat it!

Just keep in mind that bread = sugar, potatoes = sugar, corn = sugar, rice = sugar, etc...

A little sugar now and then....no big whoop. Sugar at every meal every day...zatsdeb's post explains the results quite well.

Sugar tends to deplete a body of vitamins. In humans, glucose and vitamin C use the same pathways in the body. If the food you eat is loaded with sugar, your body can't use vitamin C properly. Sugar also tends to knock out your immune system (1 can of sugar soda can suppress it for up to five hours).

My gf is the manager of a bakery thrift store. A lot of the bread too old to sell goes to hog farmers at dirt cheap prices. Since the hogs are raised for slaughter, they are butchered before the long term health effects of living on old bread and donuts can show up.
