Yesterday afternoon around 330 my Coo Coo Maran Roosters were making an awful fuss..I knew something was up...sure enough there was a racoon out there trying to tackle one of the roos..feathers everywhere. The 4 other roos were putting up a valiant fight, and I grabbed the closest weapon (a fence post). I clobbered the coon but only stunned him. He was pretty vicious and came right after me when I approached. I keep a 22 rifle around and ended the battle with a bang.
Never seen a coon come out like that during the day. I let the flock out today(free range). Hopefully I won't have any more daytime encounters.
So gang listen to your flock and all the sounds they make..Sure glad I did

once we had a very sick fox that was hangin out in our yard and acting very strange (it was like playing and rolling around in our grass)When we went outside it didnt even run away just kept on playing. we had to get a cop over to our house to kill it.

Yeah, that one would make me nervous. A daytime attack and then the coon charged you? I'd be very, very concerned about rabies. Disinfect anything that got coon blood on it.

Thank goodness you had your gun. I'm guilty of hearing a kerfluffle and running down to the coop unarmed. I'm gonna stop doing that.

You need to be very careful dealing with animals that are behaving abnormally like coming out in the daytime. Rabies would be a likely cause of them doing that.
