Lily heard another howl. What on earth is going on? She wondered. Is that the mother? But if so, why was this pup abandoned and about to get eaten?

Lavender was running pretty fast when she tripped over a stray root. She tumbled onto the ground, her back paw in incredible pain. She let out a pitiful howl as she tried to stand back up, but she just fell back down.

Lily decided, just in case, to place Cedar on the ground and leave. She set the pup down and ran into the trees.
Cedar breathed a sigh of relief. The relief was short-lived, however, when the cougar came back almost immediately. He whimpered and tried to scramble back, but his legs were like lead. He heard Lavender let out a howl. A howl of pain. I'm done for, he thought, closing his eyes

After some hard practice, Storm was
hop-walking around in the direction he had heard multiple screams and howls.

Lavender let out another sad howl, her back paw in crippling pain. Looking over at it showed a horrid sight, so she didn’t look at it.

Cedar once again tried to scramble back, but the cougar kept coming, its feet moving soundlessly across the forest floor. The cougar's eyes shone with hunger. Cedar let out a little whimper.

Right before the cougar lept, Cedar cried, "Lavender! Help!" One of his first words. And his last. Then there was silence.

Lavender let out a series of desperate barks and tried to get up, stumbling a few steps before collapsing to the ground. She let out a sob, tears running down her cheeks. She had let him down, and now he was probably dead.
