How often does every1 use DE? We r having a real prob with flies this year. We have had a lot of rain and water is laying in the field near the chicken run. I was wondering how often it is safe to sprinkle the run and the coop with the DE. Also, if we use the DE do we still use the liquid wormer in their water? Just wondering how effective DE is for worming. The girlies have been out in the coop & run for 1 week. They r 8, 9, & 10 weeks old. Thanks!!

I use DE every time I clean the coop, I use the "deep litter" method (every 3 months). I mix it into the new pine shavings, while the girls are out. I have also added some if I see any bugs in the nesting box... works like a champ... make sure it's "food grade"...

What liquid wormer are you using?

Also, I suggest researching the DE before you decide to use it. It is my understanding that it produces a fine, breathable dust that can cause lung scarring and there is some debate over its effectiveness.

I have asthma, chronic bronchitis, allergies and COPD. Using it has never bothered me. When I spread it, I do it low to where it is going so as not to make a cloud. Use common sense.
I also do not use a wormer. I use the Red Lakes brand DE. My chickens and goats eat it free choice. My dogs eat it. But my finicky cats won't touch it.
