I read the product label on line. It only contained 82% DE and also contained perythrins (FYI- toxic to cats). It is meant for external use only.

What you are looking for is "FOOD CHEMICAL CODEX GRADE" That means it's pure enough for humans to eat...and therefore good enough for your chickens to eat.

Thanks so much for all the info. I took that other stuff back to the feed store today and informed them that this is NOT food grade de for my chickens, and that in fact it would have killed them, and then you would have been footed with the bill!! So hopefully they wont sell it in the future as food grade! Thanks so much everyone!!

I've used DE for 4 years in their feed and coop surroundings and never had a crop problem....

Well I am glad that you are ok with it. I have no particular problem with it but it was said here that it can cause crop problems. wish I could remember who it was but I cannot. As to me taking DE internally Not gonna happen! If only because I have made it just fine for 56 years without it. So dont figer to start now. heck some of my worms are over fifty years old, that would be like killing a family member........ Now that I think about it, I'm sending some to my brotherinlaw in a fruitcake for christmas. The pool kind!!

LOL, I think is may have been Diana who said that about the crop problems, not sure. And I dont know about that myself. I put some in the feed bags to kill any bugs in there and in the nests throughout the straw for the same reason. I used to put it in my feed at 2% of the total, but I have cut back on that some because of some studies I heard about.
One thing I wanted to bring up was something said by someone on another forum, that she was using DE in her coop on the floors and her Leghorns began having extreme bumblefoot problems that they hadn't before. When she quit using it, the bumblefoot issues subsided. That is the only time I have ever seen anyone equate DE and bumblefoot and I don't know if it could even have any validity, but I have had bumblefoot issues for a long time with several of my birds and nothing, I mean nothing, has ever helped, not surgery, not antibiotics, nothing. Because of what was said, I quit using it on the floors in the shavings to see if it helped any. The only reason I can see is that the birds walk and scratch in the DE and eventually, it wears at the pads of their feet, drying them out and making them more susceptible to abrasions.
Diana, would you comment on this? I'd like your input.
