I have been trying to read up on DE but still a little confused on how to use it and exactly what its for.it really sounds like something I will be interested in,,if you could tell me more about it I sure would appreciate it
j&amac- DE (diatomaceous earth) is a fossilized crustacean that physically kills pests such as lice, fleas, ticks, flys etc, instead of chemically. It is a microscopic razor edged product that cuts when contact is made and then its drying agent dehydrates the critters. There are two kinds of DE...Food Grade and non food grade. The non-food grade is lethal to humans as well as animals. This non-food DE is used primarily for swimming pool filters and in agriculture and precautions must be taken to use safely! This non-food grade DE contains 65% crystalline silica, the stuff that can wreak havoc with the lungs. The food grade DE, in order to be labeled "food grade", must have a crystalline content of less than 3% to be considered "food grade". I sell PermaGuard Codex Food Grade DE which has a crystalline silica content of less than 1/2 of 1%. The makers of PermaGuard state that the dust from their product is likened to breathing road dust. For safety, they "recommend" using paper filters that fit over the mouth, when handling it. I have never used a filter but would recommend that anyone with asthma, emphasema or other problems, do so. It is also fed to livestock, chickens etc as a paracitic preventative. I take it myself as do others as there are testamonials to its health benefits. The PermaGuard that I sell is FDA approved. If you have ever eaten anything made from Bisquick, or have eaten a breakfast cereal, chances are very good that you have already injested DE. It is used in these products as a non-caking agent and because it is added to the grain before milling, is not required to be listed in the contents. It is used dry in chicken bedding to control odor as it dries out the chicken feces it comes in contact with. It also kills fly eggs in the feces after passsing through the chicken. It is used as a white-wash inside the coop on the walls to repel pests as well. I hope I have answered any questions you may have had. If you have any I didnt answer, dont hesitate to ask!
Are you taking orders yet? I'm in need of some chicken safe fire ant poison so I need the big bag. I can't find food grade but I did pick up some non-food grade but after reading the previous post, I'll only be using it in the front yard instead of the chicken infested backyard
