Is it possible, or has anyone encountered severe eye irritation or respiratory issues due to using DE copiously?

Just wondering if my two new hens are experiencing this, as they are absent of any other symptom other than sneezing occasionally and some eye discharge. They have treated with oxy tet for 5 days as per the label, are eating and drinking and laying, and it is only 2 chickens out of a group of 9 that have these symptoms (they are both legbars and the rest are barnyard mixes).

I would think if a bacterial issue, the antibiotics would have handled it. If viral, I would see worsening symptoms and more sick chickens. So my guess is environmental or the hefty application of DE that happened before they came to me.

Are legbars more sensitive?

DE has been shown to cause respiratory issues and problems in poultry. In some cases, death. I would stop using DE and never use it again. It it not in any way benefitical to poultry and only causes severe respiratory issues and distress.

Hi, do you have a link or some literature that has any information on the respiratory effects and symptoms to look for so I can try to assess if this is the case here? It wasn’t me who administered the DE so I don’t know if it got in eyes or faces, just that it was applied generously.
