DE (food grade?) good or bad

Lice are not pathogens. Lice are bugs. And if you use a poultry dust that has been properly stored and not out of date, following the directions and using follow up treatment should get you results.

Lice reproduce in sexual reproduction so they constantly changing there DNA ( and pathogen is any critter that causes disease so lice can be refer as pathogen! Reed this link especially the 2 paragraph: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infection) so in the no to far future, a resistant population will pop up, no question about it!
I want to give you a point to think about, in agriculture the main problem of farmers is insect( belong to the phylum Arthropoda like lice) that damage the crops. The main way to deal with this problem is to spray insecticide to To eradicate the harmful insects. I want to ask you if your claim is correct why they have to change the insecticide every few years? Why you hear or read about insects that are no longer influenced by a very efficient drug that use to be very good and now it isn't working? If you have a dog o a cat, do you use the same materials that was used 20 years ago? Do you use D,D.T? If you invite an exterminator to your house you think that he will use the same products that he was using 25 years ego?

DE made you sick? And it didn't make your birds sick when they down on the ground rolling around in it? Somethings not right here.
I'm not sure it was the DE that made me sick. It's just that I had been fine previous to me putting it out there. That was the only different thing I had done that day from my usual routines, so I thought it might be from breathing in all that DE dust. Believe me, that got me started thinking about the birds and how they aren't bothered by it themselves in the dust baths, which our baths are contained in big pans.I just decided to err on the side of caution next time and use a mask, just like when I clean the straw and poo out of the coop. I'm no hypochondriac but trying to use a bit of common sense, especially with the birds is all, so thought I'd pass it on if anyone has sensitivity issues with their own respiratory health. Also I thought it is a bit ambiguous that we should keep the chickens away from the coop when spreading the DE around, but they flop all around in it in their baths like I had read. I figure the difference is there's alot less of this stuff in the baths as it's the lowest content used than compared to it being the only product at the time being spread on the coop floor; therefore, more DE dust being created.

I don't need any more links, I am not going to read the ones you provided. When my chickens get lice, I treat them with an appropriate poultry dust, then I follow that dusting with another dusting, ta da all the lice are gone. I have been doing this for nearly 50 years and it has worked every time, so I see no reason to change now.

If you want to continue to argue about whether lice are pathogens, you will have to find another site member that has no idea what they are talking about. Have a good day!

Lynhill, DE CAN irritate the lungs and eyes so I would reccomend using a mask :) DE is a safer better alternative to coating my food supply with pesticide lol, so I don't even buy Sevin. Never would. For any reason. DE however...is a staple for me. Garden, house, pets, bedding, dust baths...you name it. The food grade DE is safe enough that I could spoon it on my wheaties haha...and VERY effective pest control :) Just don't inhale the dust ;)

Do you wear a mask while eating Wheaties? I'd like to see that!

Lol I don't actually eat wheaties... There's way too many chemicals and additives...it was sarcasm...based on the fact that I DO eat it lol...not on my wheaties though...it has more than 17 trace minerals in it...along with being great fertilizer for the garden I can dust my veggies and eat them, DE and all. ;)

You people are eating nothing but silica aka sand. DE (silica) goes in one end and out the other. You'd be better off taking Geritol or Fred Flintstone once a day vitamin tablets since either is easily absorbed in the digestive tract.
DE is useless when wet, just like the insides of your innards/ chickens innards as well.
