De-wormer not working?

I have a 4 month old who has been sick with worms, I believe, so I gave him Piperazine-17 in his water 2 days ago. I saw him drink at least a few big swallows. There have been worms shedding in his poop (just a few). He doesn't poop much because he isn't eating much despite me making lots of food available (regular feed, yogurt, scrambled eggs, yogurt, buckwheat (cooked), sunflower seeds, applesauce, bits of hamburger. He only makes a few halfhearted pecks at the food once in a while and just sleeps the rest of the time.

I thought he'd be better in a few days. But he doesn't look better -- he just sleeps all the time and refuses food mostly. I thought the worming would cure him, but he's still listless. And very thin. Can I dose him again with the Piperazine -- how much does one chicken need to be cured (the directions said mix 1 fluid ounce with 1 gallon of water, which I did. Then to feed that to 50 birds until it's gone). Well, I just poured him some in his water dish.

Worming should be done for 5-7 days...... what type of worms does he have? Wazine only works on round worms. Safe guard & Ivomec do more types. You will need to keep him eating.. Can you tube feed him with parrot feeding formula till he gets his strength back?

He has roundworms. I don't know about tube feeding, but I have had some success with beak-feeding in the past.

You say 5-7 days, but i'm concerned that the Piperazine-17 label said 2 days. If I did the de-worming 2 days ago, can I start up with it again tommorrow, even though I skipped a day or two?

I believe the piperzine and Wazine are the same chemical. If he still has round worms then yes, continue dosing for a few more days. Sheading a parisite load will weaken him, so you must keep up supportive care until he gains strength, keep him warm w/ a light, make sure he eats & drinks well. Best Wishes .... Oh, also most vets should be able to do a fecal.... worms are worms in any species..

I found a Merck manual instruction that says Piperazine should be used as a one dose.
If I can assume, my chicken didn't get enough of a dose a few days ago, should I try dosing him again, using this exact measurement of 50-100 mg they state? Also, how do I know how much 50-100 mg are? I have a fluid ounce container or I have an eye dropper. Any clue?

Tube feeding isn't hard. I keep a parrot recovery diet made by Harrison's on hand for tubefeeding in emergencies. It is a powder you mix with liquid. My tube for tubefeeding I got from a vet. I walked in, told them what I needed (a small tube for syringe feeding bird) and I purchased one from them (not a metal one, a soft plastic one). I hold the chicken on my lap, and open the beak. I slide the tube down the throat until I can feel it in the crop and I start depressing my syringe of food.

It has worked for me.

Try using injectable 1% cattle ivermectin orally.

It's safe and easy to use.

Thanks for the advice. I used an eye dropper to dose him tonight -- I gave him 2 drops of Piperazine mixed with a quarter ounce of water after looking at conversion charts and figuring that 2 drops is about 100 mg. It's so traumatic (for me) but also if I don't do this, I might lose him and I'm sure this is traumatic for poor chook as well. He is not looking good, though his poops are better. Tommorrow morning I am going to force feed him some vitamins and food to get his strength back. I don't think I should give him any more dewormer at this point.

wow, I wanted to be a vet, as a kid, but now I know it was not the job for me!! Aacckk... so much trauma and worry. Poor little bird.

I find tube feeding easier as there is NO concern of them choking or respirating fluid/feed if the food/fluid is being delivered directly into the crop.

are you sure your chicken doesn't have coccidiosis? Thatls kinda what the symptoms sound like
