I just wanted to ask something here please?? Doesn't ANYONE here ever just use the liquid or thin paste like Safeguard for goats on your chickens??
That's the ONLY thing I can use that I KNOW they got their entire correct dose. I once used one that was to be mixed in their food (don't even remember which it was it was so long ago) and they would NOT touch their feed!! I finally changed it out and gave then plain feed again.... well now they STILL would not go near it!! It was the CRAZIEST thing I've ever seen but it happened I assure you!! They were going up to roost with EMPTY CROPS!!?? I changed their food bowls... different color ones and everything and still they would not eat?? I finally began giving them home food... veggies, fruits, some grains like barley and oatmeal etc. Basically I just tried to give them as balanced a diet as I could this way and changing things around daily so as to give them a more balanced diet. I didn't know what to do?? Even went to an avian vet who had no idea either as to WHAT to do?? He said to continue what I was doing yet continue offering their feed at all times. So I made feed available along with their usual big bowl of oyster shell beside their feed!! Finally just out of the blue one day they just started eating it again thank God!!!!
But because of that crazy experience, I personally will NEVER add anything to their food or water EXCEPT ACV 2 tablespoons per gallon of water and thats it!!
So I use the Safeguard paste (though it's thin so I don't know what you'd really call it as being??) for the 3 days then stop for 10 and then do it again for the 3 days. However, I have read some controversy on this way of giving it?? Someone on here, I won't say who, told me they use it for 5 days not 3 days?? I also read an article that said that gapeworms are very difficult to get rid of and it said to give it for just 5 days straight with no waiting and giving again... Only for the 5 days.. BUT to worm them this way every 3 months?? I suspect gapes in mine mainly because she shakes her head from side to side sometimes, I fed them both earthworms at the advice of someone who calls himself an AVIAN VET(??!!!), she's lost alot of weight and has usually very watery poop with green small things like in it?? Or sometimes just all solid green but thin and more watery rather than more dry and formed with the white cap, which she DOES at times do those too, just mostly does the other types. I LOST my other favorite little EE hen totally unexpectedly in June and she had the same issues I just wrote above however SHE was down to feathers and bone!! Took her to TWO vets who did various exams, fecals and bloodwork on her and found NOTHING!! I THOUGHT THAT ALL WORMS SHOWED IN A FECAL FLOAT?? I have truly learned ALOT about caring for chickens on here and think I do a pretty good job with mine, but THIS I DIDN'T KNOW... meaning that some worms such as capillaria and the gapes Do Not always show up in fecals!! AND I CERTAINLY DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT EARTHWORMS BEING THE HOST!!!! Yet here I am FEEDING THEM these things at the advice of this idiot who CALLS HIMSELF an avian vet!!!! So my poor, sweet EE was probably infested with either or both these worms and they were STARVING her and I didn't know. I KILLED MY POOR HEN I TRULY BELIEVE BECAUSE IT WAS BY MY HAND THAT SHE WAS GIVEN THESE D*MN WORMS!!!! I could just die I feel so bad and I miss her sooooooo!!!! She was my angel!!!!
I also reached out to two different people on here who are known as the EXPERTS on here begging for help on what to do for her and THEY DIDN'T EVEN BOTHER TO ANSWER ME!!!! Unbelievable. One of them FINALLY decided to answer... well I'd already lost her!!!! Too little too late. I am so disgusted and so angry at the entire way this all went down as I'd have her today had this fool not had me give them worms, had I researched that FIRST BEFORE GIVING THEM TO THEM as I normally ALWAYS DO, but since he was a vet, I trusted he knew what he was telling me to do, and lastly because I BEGGED for help and neither of these people even bothered to help me.
I DON'T want to lose the other one PLUS I JUST got her a friend and now I'm TERRIFIED that she's going to get them too and obviously WILL if they're going out to the same area (it's all we have) to play, etc etc??!!! She's a juvenile almost ready to lay, 19 weeks old and is a black Australorp!! I am CRAZY IN LOVE with her already too!!!!
So DO I WORM HER WITH THE SAFEGUARD too just to be sure she's free of these things?? For how long DO YOU use that goat paste on them.. 3 or 5 days and do I repeat in 10 days or what?? I just HAVE TO BE SURE these things get GONE as emotionally I honestly CANNOT lose either of these birds!! BTW the other chicken is a Barred Rock, 2 1/2 who went down to 4.6lbs from what I'M GUESSING, as I'd never had a reason to weigh her, was about 6lbs?? After the one full treatment meaning the 3 days then again after 10,she has come up to 5.30lbs but seems to be stuck there?? It was July 14th when we started weighing and when she was the 4.6lbs. She has a good appetite and is eating. She's acting fine being up and about... other then when we let her in the kitchen when we're down there and I'm cooking or something and sometimes I just leave her in there and block her in the kitchen being wood floor with a dog gate.. she does not fly or jump much. But being in there she walks around the island a few times then finds a spot and curls up and tucks her head in her wing and goes to sleep?? Is that normal??
Just don't know WHAT to do as vets don't find anything wrong and I'm not even sure there is anything wrong anymore, but she just still hasn't gotten big and fat like she was and she shakes her head at times?? Any suggestions on what I should do... if anything?? What about the new Australorp?? She's NOT been wormed and just got her 3 days ago!!?? Should I worm her??

As for how to worm, I think we discussed that, and the way I worm when I think they have capillary worms is to give Safeguard liquid or paste at 0.23 ml per pound orally for *five* days in a row, *not* three. To the best of my knowledge, that is how capillary worms are treated. Repeat in 10 days? Some vets say to repeat, others don't.
Regarding fecals... they can be false negative, which your vet should have explained to you.

So I looked it up and what I found says the 3 on 10 off so I did it that way and am actually doing it one more time after 10 days which is what I think it may have been Dawg (??) who posted that you could do that but DON'T QUOTE ME BECAUSE I'M NOT CERTAIN IF IT WAS HIM WHO HAD POSTED IT FOR SURE!!
Daisy started at 4.6lbs best I could tell from the old scale, which however did in fact prove to be accurate as it weighed exactly as a brand new vet scale we bought weighs and weighs the same thing when I weighed myself 10 times in a row. However that was July 14th and as of 2 days ago she is still right at 5.30lbs where she's been for days now?? She hasn't continued to gain like she at first started doing pretty fast?? I am concerned mainly because I see her shake her head like Livie did and it really worries me although she doesn't do it nearly as often as Livie but am afraid she'll actually BE doing it that often if something is progressing in her?? Maybe I'm worrying too much because I lost my Livie and can't really bear to go thru that again, esp this soon!! I just can't. She's eating her feed again now and alot more in the last couple days since I got the juvenile Australorp!! She's very active on her side of the lanai opposite Ebby, the new baby!! In fact she's in such a rampage, I had to bring her into the kitchen at daybreak because she was out there making such a racket I was afraid she'd wake all our neighbors!! So she certainly does not show the same depressed like behavior Livie did and Livie didn't have much appetite either and she does. So maybe I'm freaking for nothing?? Or maybe she did have some of either of the worms we each mentioned and the safeguard took care of them and she will just gain slowly?? Also she's really just started eating her feed alot better than she was before getting Ebby!!
I do think I should worm Ebby as well though as a preventative measure if anything else?? Do you agree and if not why do you feel I should not?? I ask that only to learn from you NOT to question you!!

I see in your article it says same treatment for gapeworms. I saw another article that differed.. I'll see if I can find it. I think there seems to be some differences in treatment according to different sources?? It's so confusing.

And paste... paste or liquid, you give the same amount 1 ml of paste = 1 ml of liquid = 100 mg. Did you know that a pea sized amount of paste = 25 mg? Not sure where that pea size misinformation came from, but anyone that uses that in under dosing their birds

Panacur paste = Safeguard Paste, they are the same thing, just a different name.
Small = 10 mg ( 0.1 ml) = enough for a 200 gram (0.44 pounds) bird at 50 mg/kg
Medium = 25 mg (0.25 ml) = enough for a 500 gram (1.1 pound) bird at 50 mg/kg
Large = 50 mg ( 0.5 ml) = enough for a 1000 gram (2.2 pounds) bird at 50 mg/kg
Weighed empty 6 ml syringe
Filled with Panacur 10% paste and weighed. Difference is 6 grams, so 6 grams = 6 ml
Here's the deal... if one is going to treat for gapes, why not just go ahead and treat for capillary worms? That's how I look at it. There is one *study* that suggests treating for gapes could be done in three days, but that's just one study. The decision to treat for five days and repeat in ten days is something you should be able to ask your vet about. When we spoke on the phone I think I mentioned that some vets have people re-treat again in 10 days, some do not. Heck, there was one BYC member that was instructed to treat for seven days, then again in ten days.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! GREAT INFO!!!! I WILL SAVE THIS FOR CERTAIN!!!! LOL
She is about 2 now I'd say?? I will TRY to get a video of her doing this shaking her head thing, however it won't be easy because luckily, thank God she's NOT doing this all the time like my poor Livie was, who I'm just CERTAIN probably passed away due to A HUGE infestation of capillaria worms after eating the earthworms that IDIOT VET told me to feed her without AT LEAST telling me it might be a good idea to worm her AFTER giving them to her??!!! BUT "I" (in quotation because it was by MY hand that she got those worms, meaning it was totally MY FAULT for not researching it BEFORE just listening to that idiot who calls himself an avian vet, and I'll NEVER forgive myself for losing a bird I loved so very much and continue to cry for DAILY because I miss her SO!!) because with her it was almost a constant thing. She'd shake her head every couple minutes poor angel. And here STUPID ME thinking she might have something "neurological" going on???? Duh what an idiot I am!!!! I'm sorry to go on and on but I'm just SOOOOOOO ANGRY... at myself, the vet AND even the few people I had reached out to on here, more than once, and noone ever even tried to help which I find CRAZY since I've always had SO much GREAT help and advice from so many, esp YOU on here??!!! So why that happened that way I don't know?? I guess she was just supposed to go home and that's the way it went??!!!
Anyways, Daisy only does it once in awhile and may be nothing but me OVER worrying as always!!??? I say this because I notice she ALWAYS does it if I offer her something, such as a thin slice of cooked carrot. She'll look and look at it and then do this fast shake of her head and not take it?? Maybe that's a normal reaction for all I know??
But I also have been hearing her make this loud, noise I can't really explain?? I thought it was a chicken sneeze but I'm not sure now?? It's like A LOUD but real quick peep sound and she usually will do it when she's eating something like say mealworms this morning. It's almost like she got one caught and she's clearing her throat?? She DOES NOT walk around doing this or anything like that. But I HAVE heard her do it several times for certain. She has no drainage from her nose, beak, ears, etc. Her eyes are clear. Her feathers look fine... Just as they've always looked. Her comb had gotten really pale almoat pink for awhile but it's gotten pretty deep red again now. So I just don't know. I just wish I knew WHY she lost so much weight?? That's all I want to know cause it's really the only thing that has me worried this much?? She also has usually pretty watery poops, however since a chick this has pretty much always been the case in summer with the heat here in Florida and her drinking so much water. I've looked at the charts about normal poops and I've only seen some that MIGHT be abnormal, but they're NOT her NORMAL poop and since they aren't a recurrent thing, I'm not thinking they were anything or they would continue all or most of the time and that's not the case either??
Lastly, while you're around, can you please give me one more piece of your good advice please?? Shouldn't I just go ahead and worm my new Australorp juvenile who is almost 20 weeks old?? Just for safe measure since I still don't know if she even has/had these worms but was fed earthworms several times which brings the chances much higher of her having had them or even still have some, meaning Daisy??
Oh and I don't know why but I thought you'd told me a 1/2ml of the Safeguard PASTE.... the one for horses is the only one I have?? So if it's an entire 1ml then I've probably just wasted my time AND the paste as I've only given her HALF the amount I should have given her!!??
Should I just start over and give her 1ml for the 5 days then stop and be done until the spring and then repeat or use the Wazine so not to build a resistance with these meds?? Would I give the juvenile the same amount of 1ml also for the 5 days??

She also has usually pretty watery poops, however since a chick this has pretty much always been the case in summer with the heat here in Florida and her drinking so much water. I've looked at the charts about normal poops and I've only seen some that MIGHT be abnormal, but they're NOT her NORMAL poop and since they aren't a recurrent thing, I'm not thinking they were anything or they would continue all or most of the time and that's not the case either??
Lastly, while you're around, can you please give me one more piece of your good advice please?? Shouldn't I just go ahead and worm my new Australorp juvenile who is almost 20 weeks old?? Just for safe measure since I still don't know if she even has/had these worms but was fed earthworms several times which brings the chances much higher of her having had them or even still have some, meaning Daisy??
Oh and I don't know why but I thought you'd told me a 1/2ml of the Safeguard PASTE.... the one for horses is the only one I have?? So if it's an entire 1ml then I've probably just wasted my time AND the paste as I've only given her HALF the amount I should have given her!!??
Should I just start over and give her 1ml for the 5 days then stop and be done until the spring and then repeat or use the Wazine so not to build a resistance with these meds?? Would I give the juvenile the same amount of 1ml also for the 5 days??

Here is a video that shows Daisy well and is very recent. IF you have just a couple minutes to look at it, you can see for yourself how she's looking and how she is acting as well?? It's not long.. a couple minutes or so. You can enlarge the video with the pinch and zoom thing with your fingers and really see her up close also.

No, this was only so you could assess how she LOOKS to you!! As I had said above I will try do get her doing it but since there's no set time she does it, it'll be hard to catch. Now I DO have one video where she does do it or very similar and I am pretty sure this is the one that I'm going to attach.
