de-worming chickens with goat safeguard(fenbendazole)

How many mg of fenbendazole do you say are in 2 ounces of .5% Safeguard pellet dewormer?

I have already given this to my chickens after I had removed their feed from overnight until 10:00 A.M. the next day. So they were off feed for about 15 hours and they ate the Safeguard very well at 10:00 A.M.
I did the math a long time ago and don't remember.

My calculations come to 283.49 mg fenbendazole in 2 ounces. Can that be so? I figure 28349 mg in one ounce and multiply that by 2 ounces to get 56698 mg of feed. Now to figure the fenbendazole, multiply by .005 to get 0.5 % of that and get 283.49 mg of fenbendazole. Is that enough for a 3 pound hen?

The 0.5% stuff has 2.27 grams per fenbendazole pound, which is 2270 mg per pound *ten pound bag has 22700 mg fenbendazole).

  • 2270 mg ÷ 16 ounces = 141.875 mg per ounce

When I use the liquid or paste I give 23 mg fenbendazole per pound of bird, so a three pound hen of
mine would need 68 mg, which is about 1/2 ounce of pellets.

Did I do the math correctly?

With the amount of fenbendazole I use, a ten pound bag would treat 200 five pound hens for one day. Note that the instructions on the bag are usually for horses, goats and cattle, and they get get much less. One ten pound bag will treat *10* 1000 pound grass eaters.

Would that be 2.27 grams of fenbendazole per pound of feed? Therefore 2270 milligrams fenbendazole per pound of feed. And therefore, 2270 / 16 = 141.875 milligrams fenbendazole per ounce of feed not ounce of bird. Therefore 283.75 milligrams in two ounces of feed.

Yes, that's what I meant. The way you wrote it is much easier to understand.

While I'm at it, one 10 pound bag has as much fenbendazole as 227.27 ml of the Safeguard liquid or paste.

Okay thanks. So, do you think 283 milligrams fenbendazole given in that manner would work for my hens? They are kind of small, around 3 to 5 pounds each.

I have not sampled their poop so I wanted to do a broad spectrum treatment. Then I will follow up with something to get the rest of what I may have missed. I live in South Georgia if that helps with identifying what is commonly a pest for the hens.
