Dead 5wk old

This is an older picture but I have the same set up. I turn off the heat lamp a couple hrs each day since I was going to put them outside soon.View attachment 3084567
That's too small and too hot for chicks that age. They don't need that heat lamp at all.

Yea, they really need a place to retreat from the heat. Those plastic tubs can get really hot really fast.

At 5 weeks, I feel they are ready to go out there today if the weather is decent.
It's been in the high 30's/low 40's the past few days and we had a snow storm Tuesday. So I didnt think it would be warm enough for them.

TBH, that's still not a dealbreaker if there are a good number of fully feathered chicks being put into a properly ventilated coop.

How many chicks do you have?
How well are they feathered?
What does your coop situation look like?

And on the subject of crowding, I usually play things by feel and up until last week, I had 8 chicks at 5-6 weeks in age in a 12 square foot brooder. Still felt a bit crowded, but I would aim for at least 1 square foot per chick so they have room to stretch out and avoid any bully chicks.

I turned off their heat lamp completely at 3 weeks old and put them outside at 4.
Temps are 40s-60s.

They’re doing fine.
After the first few weeks, chicks really don’t need the heat people say they do.
But they do need the space.
Mine were making each other bleed by the end of their brooder stay. They were unhappy with their space.

I’m sure your chicks have been perfectly happy so far but they don’t need the heat and they don’t need the stress of being stuck in a small space, because those elevated stressors can contribute to deaths.
Hope the rest of your chicks are doing well!
