Dead and dying chicks from a "hatchery"

I picked them up within minutes of their arrival at the local post office! As far as the weather changing, They were in the route from the hatchery and the post office to me for FOUR cotton picking days! They would have been fine if the hatchery had not left them in a truck for 48 hours in the cotton picking snow! RB is not a hatchery. The birds they sell are drop shipped directly from the hatchery. The lady from RB changed her story three times and never did admit or take responsibility for this issue. I really hate being lied to. I would also like to find out which of their hatcheries were responsible and report them to the ASPCA. It was not just my birds that died, but from what I'm being told, it was a large part of the shipment.

The post office that called me was closed (9:00PM) and on the other side of a mountain range.

What is the ASPCA to do? Both parties are at fault.

It is the wrong time of year to have them shipped end of story.

Did you find out after you ordered chicks that they are the middle man? Did you find a local hatchery?

I know I new here, but from what I have been reading, that long in transit in good weather would have been hard on the chicks right?

You are correct. I've been doing this for a long time and this is the first time I've ever had anything like this happen. One of the hatcheries I use puts a "heat pack" in with the birds to keep them warm. The "heat pack" keeps the birds warm for up to five days. It would be nice if more hatcheries did this. In my view, if the hatchery can't act more responsibly tward living things they shouldn't be shipping living things.

smfrich I am sorry to hear about the chicks. I agree with you they should do a better job of shipping and most importantly tell the truth of when they ship. Katrinag, lighten up a little. She feels bad about all this and you make it sound like it is her fault.

That is horrible. Poor babies. I know you don't want to out them, but I think I would rather advertise exactly who they are, then to allow them to kill other babies.
And Katrinag, chill, for one, she is in CA not IL, big difference. And if it were spring time, the babies still need to eat and drink, they went almost a week with no food and water, can you survive with no food and water?

Just because the buyer is in California doesn't mean the chicks didn't pass through some very cold weather to get to her.

Personally I don't think Katrinag needs to chill out. I agree with her. Why would you not drive an hour to get the chicks you knew had had an extra long trip and were distressed already!?! The post office person might have been able to give them a drink, but I doubt she had a brooder with a heat lamp for them.

I would have gone down to get them, but it was 9

M, they were closed and not allowed to give it to me. I'm just thankful that they called me and did their best with the chicks. I had a rough night trying to sleep knowing that they were dying by degrees. I live less than a mile from the post office. I know the people who work there and they called me at 7:AM I was there in minutes.

I have to agree. If anything like this happens again, ask them to wait for you to pick up the chicks and drive to get them. I live in the mtns and I would definitely do it; that is, if I ever had chicks shipped from a hatchery, which I refuse to do.
