Dead baby chick

Today when we decide to check on our baby chicks and found one dead but we didn't know how it died he body was black and was on a pile of food. My sister buried the food but what happens if the chicks eat the food where the dead body was? What was the reason the chicked dead the only thing I know is yesterday a chick was sneezing about and we got our chicks a TSC

I don't think it would hurt the chicks if they ate the food, chickens eat all kinds of gross things. As to why it died, hard to say really. Maybe it had some underlying genetic abnormality. Maybe something spooked them in the cage and it bashed the wall. Maybe they got cool, piled up and that one ended up on the bottom.

Sorry you lost one, but this is an (unfortunate) part of raising chicks. Sometimes they just aren't meant to make it :/

Well we called the vet and no one knows how the chicken died and our chicks live in a crate a big one with a heat lamp and every thing

Do you have a part warm part COOL area that they can regulate their temperature if they get too hot. If not make one right away! Each week lower your tempature by 5 degrees!! They MUST have a area to cool off!! I hate to say this but if they can't cool off its like they are cooking.

I would just chalk it up to "failure to thrive" and enjoy the remaining chicks. Most vets dont deal with chickens, so I'm not surprised they couldn't give you an answer. One option, which you hopefully won't ever need, is to contact your States agricultural department and ask if there are any labs or universities around you that do necropsies. Most will do them for free or a small fee. If you have another die, you could send it in and have it tested. They mail back the results so you know what you're dealing with.

We think the chicken went into shock is there any reason why they will go to shock in the coop?

Absolutely. The wind could've blown and rustled things around and scared them. A butterfly could've flown by. I mean, they're basically scared of everything as chicks. And when they get scared, they run and fly around frantically and bad things can happen. Did you happen to notice anything off, like weird droppings or lethargy? I'm wondering if maybe you had a bout of cocci and that one just couldn't deal. If you'd moved them to the coop fairly recently, the stress of the move could have caused the cocci overload.
