Dead Chick

So what would cause a 2-3 week old chick to die suddenly? It looked fine one day and then the next it died. Any thoughts?

One of my 2week old chicks died suddenly from a sour crop. Hope this helps...and sorry about your chick!

What is sour crop?

Basically, Sour Crop or crop binding is a term given to problems that can cause slow crop emptying or total lack of movement of crop contents. The food left in the crop that hasn't fully emptied, can start to ferment...and become fatal. Hope this helps!

What was it eating? Just chick food, or other things, also? If they are eating treats or grass, they will need grit of some kind to help digest it. Was it alone, or were others in with it? What was the temperature in the brooder? There could be several things, depending on the circumstances. It doesn't take much when they are little.

Very sorry for your loss. So sad to lose them.

Did you check the chicks vent area. Many chicks die of pasty butt if it's not noticed and cleaned in time

And sometimes if there are many chicks in the brooder it can accidentally get smooshed over and over if something scared them.

I feel ya. Our first batch was 3..4 frizzles and a crested polish. All were fine..ratting..drinking..pooping..and no pasty. Checked on them all the time just to watch them play. Came back an hour later and found a frizzle flopped down and limp. To took it out and my wife sat with it on the porch with it in a lil box. She tried to help it drink..it would have spasms. Then 20min later it passed away. We never figured out what happened but I think he may have choked on some of the pine shavings or maybe drank down the wrong pipe. It was like he was gasping for air... it would be sad to find a dead chick, but id rather then having it slowly die in your hands.
