I have a story of woe to tell. I have had chickens for two years now. I am only at the farm half the time because we have some thief and vandel problems so dad is staying out there to finish pluming the house . This spring I got 10 chicks who were 4 weeks old everything was great until they were 8 weeks old then when i was in town dad called and said that a chick was missing then i found it dead behind a water .next one was eating food that they had kicked in to the hinge of the
door and i closed the door on its neck . then we had 3 mystery deaths we put it down to heat(we were having a heat wave)so we put them in a seller in dog crates and one stuck its head out of the crate and broke her neck. now it gets real sad two of my 6 year old birds died. then cross beak died 😿 finally another adult died and comes the sadist death after months of fighting canker my sweet pet chicken died bringing us up to date. I started this year with 19 chickens 10 chicks 9 adults now I have 8 birds

:hugs I'm sorry to read about your losses.

Hopefully things will turn around and be better for the rest of the year.

This feels so dramatic but I am now down to 4 birds although all the deaths are explainable the we now have 2 adults and 2 young birds.even though I know that the adults are older birds it doesn't hurt any less so to:Stripey Mapel-Walnut Hockeye Elinor Do-Hickey Saskatoon Snowcone Cross-Beak Fluffy-Head Little-Stripey the 5 chick's who never got named to Sunflower who died 2 winters ago and to roast who died 1 week after I got chickens also to everyone else's special birds who have died R.I.P
Tell me about all your beautiful birds please those who say they were just chickens are wrong they were just best friends pets and a confident loving part of are life's we will always love you

I am so sorry for your losses. People who say they were "just chickens" must not have the ability to love creatures that you and I know are beautiful, incredible little beings.

Although it's heartbreaking to lose beloved chickens, we are lucky to have had them in our lives. I will never forget Honey, a Buff Orp and one of my original hens. She greatly outlived all her peers, and knew that when I asked, "Where's my fine hen?" I meant her, and there would be treats waiting. My pet sitter nicknamed Honey "Boop," for the little happy sounds she made.

Sometimes, for just a split second, I almost think I can still see her in the yard, digging for treats. She will always be with me.

You gave your birds good lives; they gave you great memories.

So sorry for all the losses. I know it hurts.
I went through a period where I lost a chicken every day and was nearly down to one. I nearly gave up but friends here encouraged me and now I have a happy flock again.
I miss the ones I lost and for some I have no idea why.
Hang in there. Learn from any mistakes and move forward.
:hugs

I know what you mean! My last luttel hen was always the bottom of the pecking order and when I went to feed her the day after the last bird died she just grabbed the first peace in reach and ran away with it so nobody would take it it broke my heart she could have it all but she didn't realize that she was alone 💔 😔
